Lexicon OMEGA/Cubase Studio 4/FL studio 7/monitoring with headphones for now:
I'd like to be able to use FL studio VSTi's (DRUMS specifically) within Cubase. Playing with it I've been able to at least record some VSTi's from FL in Cubase, but NOT drums for some reason. Can anyone post a step by step (assume I'm 10 years old) on how to get this working CONSISTENTLY.
ie., open cubase/FL 1st?? and so on... I'm ALMOST there.
Also, I'm open to downloading/buying/etc NEW drum programs if that's an easier way to go...
Thanks in advance for any help!!

I think not too many people here do to much rewiring. On occasion I will rewire Reason into Project 5, but have never used Fruity or Cubase, so I'm really not sure what to do...

I use rewire with Sonar. Usually with BFD or EZDrummer. I have no idea how to do it in Cubase.

JACK user here...

If it works like JACK (which it should) you may have to go into and assign each input and outpput of each application to go where you want to... I sometimes have problems with JACK Connect assigning all inputs and outputs instead of just the one I want...

ie...hypothetically and using vast generalizations... say, mixer channel 12&13 is a stereo drum track... normally 12:out and 13:out goto FL:master:in and FL:master:out goes to Lexicon:audio-out...

If you want to record the drum track in cubase then you out have to set it's input so that it 'listens ' to FL's 12&13 the same way FL's 'master' output track did...

of course... I have no idea how rewire actually works... but thats how JACK would do it...

All you should have to do is:

- open Cubase
- activate ReWire in Cubase (1 time only)
- Open Fruity Loops

or if you want to use FL as a VSTi:
- open Cubase
- go to Devices->VST Instruments
- select FL VSTi in one of the open slots
- click the "edit" button on the FL VSTi. This will open the FL VSTi control panel, allowing you to load a patch or whatever
- create a MIDI channel in cubase
- open the inspector tab
- For MIDI input, select whatever MIDI controller you are using
- for MIDI output, select FL VSTi

Here's a snippet from a web article on activating ReWire in Cubase:

[quote]
Go to the Devices menu, which lists the various ReWire-compatible applications. Click on the application you want to rewire into Cubase, and a ReWire panel appears that shows all available client channels. Click on the buttons toward the left to enable the channels you want (note that you can rename the channel names in the right column — double-click and enter the new name).

The activated channels now show up in the mixer; in the Arrangement window, they appear in a folder track called ReWire Channels. Furthermore, with ReWire2 clients, the MIDI Output pop-up menus for MIDI tracks will display the various ReWire devices. As a result, you can route MIDI data from a track directly into the client application.

Thanks for the replies! I THINK I want to use FL as a VSTi...BUT, when "adding new track>" I've been clicking "instrument" then, "no VSTi" pops up, and you can pick from a list...at which point I've at least been able to record some synth sounds just to mess around. Is this the same as a "MIDI" channel or am I way off???

I've also managed to record a loop from FL in Cubase, which is cool, but I never know how to consistently do these things!!!

I will go home and try what Tadpui says and see how it works..

thanks again!
