Indie music website

One of my coworkers put me on to this website, encouraging me to put some music on it. I also like it as a fan of (independent) music, and have found quite a bit of music that I like on it.

www.thesixtyone.com

It basically operates on an anyone can participate principle, but the cream rises to the top (mostly).

By the way, I have a song on the front page for hip hop, so if you sign up, feel free to bump it (bace135-broken windows). Also if you want to give me more points put "coolo" for referral... but it's not necessary.

Hmmm, still have yet to find any metal I like. There was a band that sounded fantastic and reminded me of Tool, System of a down and Incubus all at the same time. Problem is, they reminded me of them the whole time and I'm not looking for re-runs, I need something new.

Although, the "Hot ***** Arsenal" is pretty impressive, she has a nice soothing voice.

CptTripps,

If you like Anthrax, "Fatal Influence" are great. I especially like the song Red Death.

Thanks Coolo, I choice metal for the second Genre, Rock was the first. I love metal but I wouldn't consider either of those two songs Heavy metal. lol

Just uploaded a couple string quartets for now. Procession and Recession, which I had written both for a wedding, and as a practice in counterpoint.

I'll throw on my celtic tune once I can upload another track.

3 bumps for Makes No Sense (wish the song was longer...) and 1 bump for Papa Joes (what an odd song - must be from the musical challenge thread?)

Heh, if we get more people to participate, we could have our own little HRC cabal. If everyone were to bump everyone we could consistently have HRC music on the home pages of the sixty one.

Yeah, papa joes was just a filler and was indeed from the challenge thread, you should check out the original from the youtube posted, it was quite a fun song actually.

Makes no sense might do ok. I have a longer version actually, just never finished the solo on it (hint hint anyone). It was a riff to test the K2 mic when I bought it and then I made up lyrics on the fly, that of course is why it "makes no sense".

But I listed you as my referal for my artist account, you stand to earn 100 points per level if I ever make it :)

CptTripps, there's two main ways...

1) you can listen to the rack, which feeds you random songs (and you get points for listening)

2) you can click on the browse link and there are some filters so you can point a little more what you want to listen to

3) you can click on peoples profiles and see what they have as their selected music...

I mostly do the browse thing, but beware when browsing, there is a lot of "not good" or lame music on that site...

Tadpui, i'm gonna go bump your stuff real quick!

Cpt, looks like you made it to level 2 and i got a bunch of points for it. Yay!

The earlier on that you bump a song the more it costs, but it also earns you more points for every bump after. It's like gambling on a song, if you think it's that good it will cost you more but payoff in the long run.

Frisco's Most Underrated

I've found that if you want to accumulate points (as a fan) just bump a couple of the songs on the home page... they only cost 5 points but since everyone see them, they usually go up. It's usually a decent investment (but not always).

Sure thing, I think the FAQ says it best as I was confused at first. I would say your rating system is pretty solid for finding the goodies here, only thing is the listeners earn points for "listening". It's actually pretty slick.

Cpt, I think they watch your IP (or something), so that if you login to your artist and fan account during the same internet session, you can't bump your own music...

Or, at level 1 you can only bump each song once, level 2, twice, and so on...

Czar of Turd Polish

Yup, IP filtered, just read it in the forums. Which sucks though cause I'm bumping the other way around, I wanted my listener account to get in early on what I thought my be a decently received song. Oh well...

p.s. Lvl 3, another 100 for the coolo. :)

Big fat sliding power chords done on a Fender bassman 250W 1x15 with the tone knob on my bass turned about 3/4 down. For never having done hip hop before I was pretty stoked.

I did drumagog the kick and snare though, the natural drum tone just wasn't hardcore enough for our gangsta lyfestylez ;)

Not a problem playing wise, just time :) I would have no problem sending you some stuff and telling you the tempo so you can chop up what you want. Just know, they are probably\or will be, in a song elsewhere though :)

Actually, for all the negative thoughts I have about my skills from time to time (own worst critic type deal) I think I make some pretty catchy bass lines. Too bad I don't play bass in a band :(

Haha, I just checked my rank under the "leaders" section. I am #850, just a couple more points and I will pass up the all mighty "Mustard Empire".

well, up to 30 points now, almost level 2 so hopefully I can post another track soon. I think I'm #89 out of 150 in instrumental, and like #33/42 on classical.

Quick question on their encoding scheme. The two quartets I posted sound fine to me, but I think I rendered them as 160kbps. Lantern seems to have some anomalous noises though. I'm wondering if they re-encode submitted mp3's down to 128kbps for sake of download speed, since when I try downloading from my profile, the bitrate shows as 128kbps. Lantern was submitted as 192kbps, but if it was re-encoded, that might explain the odd noise. Either that, or maybe the original render had the levels running a little too hot.

I'll try producing a 128kbit version and drop the volume levels a few dB and re-upload to see how it turns out. May need to fiddle with the drum track a little though.

Anyways, I was just courious about how they handle uploads.

Aww, Sorry to hear that man. I guess I'll count myself lucky that the university network guys aren't so harsh. Well, that and I'm friends with our admin.

Edit:
Well, re-uploaded the 128kbit version of Lantern but it still seems "dirtier" than the source mp3. Hmmm, maybe it just doesn't like that one synth lead. Even lowered the levels a bit. And I did make some minor changes... I also messed with the guitar sound a bit. Couldn't resist playing with FreeAmp 3. :D Well, overall it's a slight improvement either way, so I'll leave it as is. If they want the "nicer" version, they'll just have to pester me for it :P

Wow, how ironic. I happened to start with CptTripps and bumped him and just let the player go. Funny enough the next song to play after Tripps stuff finished along comes this tune called Angel by some band called Twin Twelve. I just found it kind of odd that listening to an HRC member and his stuff is followed by another HRC member.

I've already bumped several today and reached level 4 as a listener from level 2 this afternoon. I'm just letting the rack play and adding stuff. It appears you gain points for downloads as well.

I have another 280 points to spend now and will be bumping again tomorrow evening.

I still need to search out everyone here though. If you haven't already listed what your music is under here yet do so and I'll seek you guys out.

BH, are you under London Project? I tried to search that and came up empty handed.

Hey noise, ya London Project.... strange that it is not showing up. I've never really searched for it as I've always had a link so who knows??

BH, I got it tonight as it came up in the rack and I just followed it to your page and added all your tunes. Bumped some and will bump more as I go.

Can someone tell me if it is total bumps for all time or is it on a per day basis. I am now allowed 4 bumps but it only let me bump coolo to a total from yesterday and today of 4.

I like that rack thing as I just let it play and earn points and add stuff as i am going. Lotsa good downloads as well.

I also got awarded 96 points from a band called Glow World or Alex Glow World. I simply added him and I think even bumped him once and low and behold I get gifted 96 points from doing that. And its the only song he has up. I found that odd, but cool.

OK I think I have everybody now and have added yer music and started bumping others that I have not bumped.

J-bot, unknowingly I had already added yer stuff and bumped you when Haven was playing in the rack. I recognized the music but it was late and your name there fooled me, it might have been the picture as well.

Has anyone else noticed that there is a large number of Second Life people there? I got hit on by two different girls/women already on my wall which I quickly deleted. Not really into the cyber honeys anyway.

Aye, I've noticed quite a few of those second-life pics on users as well. Thankfully nobody's tried to throw any comments or hit-ons my way at least hehe :) Thanks for the bump Noize :)

I think I set my artist-name as my real name, but the page is under JBot. Wonder if I can fix that.

Ya, it was kind of funny cause the music sounded very familiar and I just wasn't registering it. And like I said, the pic and the name just threw me a curve.

I'm sure you should be able to go in and edit it, maybe.

I'll be bumping a bunch more later. I figured I'd just play the rack for awhile and gather some major points up to use. I've gathered some decent points and am just short of level 6 which I'm sure by the time I log in tomorrow I'll be there from points gained by some decent choices I've made and artist's I've added. I've noticed that bumping something playing in the rack that I think will do well pays off in the long term.

I jumped on the bandwagon here... I just had to after reading the posts in this thread. I like this community a lot; it's really focused on the music instead of drama and b/s. Good times :) I'm registered as Keith Warren if you wanna send some bump-age my way. :)

I haven't touched it in days, I should hopefully have some good points racked up to spend. I need to go through this post and make a list of all the artists.

Actually... here we go so far as far as artist accounts go. I will slang my points tonight.

CptTripps = Lunar Landing and the Tightropes
Keith Warren = Keith Warren
BeerHunter = London Project
JScott = Twin Twelve, J. Scott Curlin
JBot = James W. Pennington
Tadpui = C.D. Prewett
Coolo = bace135

I'm off to go do some bumping, I got 1400 points to throw around. Yee! Keith, you're tops on my list to bump.

Just to chime in, but if you search for "JBot" on the61, it'll return with my real name showing up (James W. Pennington) however the account page is still JBot, and I haven't found a way to change it around...(don't think there is one actually)

I spent quite a few points over the weekend, but once I get some return, I'll give Keith some bumpin' lovin'.

.... is it just me or did that just sound very very wrong?

Mine fan account of course is noize2u, I haven't thought of a name for an artist account yet though as they wont let me use the same name. I should have thought of that before I jumped in.

Keiths fan account is KeithWarrensEar by the way.

I'm lovin the place to just let it play in the background. Freakishly I'm still listed on the front page as one of the top rookies. I guess reaching level 6 in a matter of a few days is good then. I just need to score some major hits to garner some big points.

It's kind of a struggle for me to gain points as a fan, because most of my bumps are for hip hop songs, and not many people there bump hip hop like they bump rock... plus it's hard to listen to the rack for too long, cuz while there is some awesome music there... there is also some HORRIBLE music there as well, and I have a hard time listening to some of it. The never play again button gets a lot of use!

I let the rack play on my work PC from 3:30 yesterday until 7:00 this morning. I "racked" up about 600 points that I will happily spend on some HRC goodness. I know it's cheating but I just don't care :)

You can only get so many points per day with the rack. Don't know what the limit is, but you have to wait until tomorrow, then you can get points again.

Hmmm, yeah, the rock/alternative tunes definitely seem to take the spotlight most the time. It's what people like :D Guess I'll have to get off my duff and try producing a more rock or jazz oriented track sometime. Maybe swap out the two quartets for some more recent work hehe.

I don't know, I've been hearing folk, electronica hip hop and all kinds of stuff in the rack here. Some pretty spacey stuff as well. J-bot, your stuff was in the rack a couple of times so even classical and jazz is getting in there.

I did find that it stalls out once in awhile though as it did to me on Saturday when I fired it up before I left for the lake and only gained about 20 points.

Tonight listening from 7 pm to now which is 10 I plundered well over 150 points in that short period.

I am wondering as well if it is watching what you add and download as well. I've noticed that a couple of times if I add something that is new and strange I get a bonus.

Ya, Keith is keeping me appraised since I don't get home till after 6 lately. He is at number 1 now though. I'm trying to break 1000 points and then start bumping again. The rack is actually paying off for me at the moment it seems.

I'm just trying to catch up with studio work as well and keep up here so I'm not spending a lot of time out bumping at the moment.

I got demoted 2 levels and lost half my points.... sucky.

They instituted a new leaderboard ranking strategy based on "metadata" that makes it more fair; in other words, 1 bump no longer equals 1 point. They're not telling anyone what the new criteria is, only that it's changed.

Well, FL-Studio 8 released today, so I got a new track up, although it's still kinda WIP-ish. It's mostly done. Ah, electronica goodness. (I messed with it in the FL8 RC2, which expired a week or so ago, so had to wait for the official release to work on it again, doh!)

Anyhoo, I still have a couple gems left that may be post-worthy after freshening up a bit (updating the sounds and such) but otherwise, it's looking like everything after this will be brand spanking new!

I may need to get my friend's permission since a couple of the tracks I'd like to freshen up were done for his group's class project, but I doubt that'll be an issue.

Anyway, my goal is to have at least one track ready to go for each new level I hit. I just hope I can make enough time to hack it hehe. Wish me luck!

Just listening, man is that cool indeed. Very dreamy and intoxicating. Are you suing and arp on the one sound or is it a Sample and Hold patch? Either way I love the way it filters and moves around in the track. I'm a sucker for a good filtered sound.

Sounds pretty good right now, can't wait to hear it when its done.

Byte-Mixer

For the arps, I'm using a modified reset of Ugo's Rez synth (which has some nice arp capabilities) in tandem with one of the arps on Yellowtools Independence Free.
And setting the panning to an LFO kinda thing, so it pans left and right. Other than that, the arps just follow the chord progressions of the strings/pads, but it works pretty well. It is simple, but nice. :D

The track is pretty much good to go, I just may tweak a few minor things hehe.

Czar of Midi

Ya, the arps are what really got me listening harder. They work very well in this for sure. I'll have to go have a look at those two synths. Like I need anymore at all. I think I already have the YellowTools one, not sure though.

Ya, I'm with you on the addiction part JScott.

I have not used a revive yet so when I hit 3000 points it should be level 9 and I'll do the revive if you haven't gotten to it yet.

I wish I had more time to just let the rack play and could invest some time in choosing the right songs to earn some points.

Although a couple of Keith's have scored me some very good points, around 750 or so I think.

Hehe seems a few people have been giving me some bumps. Oddly enough, the Recessional has the highest score so far at 52 bumps, and I don't even consider it one of my stronger works -lol-

Anyhoo, the Trumpet quartet was the last thing I posted there, so it hasn't gotten much attention yet. But no worries, it'll probably be awhile before I can post anything new. Full-time work eating up quite a bit of my time, but hey, it's money which = paid bills. :)

Aw Yeah! My song Get Right finally posted to the Hip Hop home page. I was starting to wonder if it was going to.

Apparently you can still bump something if it says revive, you just have to hit revive, and then there is an option to bump. That will explain how I kept getting points on Broken Windows a while back.

Ya, I figured that out last week.

But ya, I got the email on it hitting. Very cool indeed.

I scored some more points from it today as well. I found some krazy kat or two kats really called King Tut and their stuff has been just popping me with points. Its kind of off the beaten path stuff, you should give them a quick listen. I think I added a couple in my radio, otherwise they are in my bumped list.
