Just got a lap top

Got a pretty good deal on an HP 9720...man, I already hate Vista tho...constant prompts of "are you sure" and such...pretty different interface.

I spent the first hour or more uninstalling the 60 day Norton trial, 60 day Office trial, a slew of HP games, disabling HP's "system monitors", the silly gadgets, yahoo search thing in my task bar and other miscellaneous junk.

Then, start downloading and installing ACG, OpenOffice, Eclipse, GIMP, FireFox and whatnot...

Sheesh, no wonder I hate buying new PC's, it's a hassle, but I needed it...

Still, sweet unit, AMD Turion64 x2, 2 GB RAM, couple hundred GB HDD or thereabouts...CD and DVD burning, lightscribe USB, Firewire, remote control, 17" screen...pretty cool.

Dell also bundles more junk on their computers than most brands it looks like to me from what I saw.

I dunno, this dual I have nere seems damn fast...of course, I haven't put that much on it yet...I am going the all freeware route so far...

Firefox
Eclipse
OpenOffice
Gimp w/Gimpshop
Audacity

Now I jsut need to see if Eclipse can FTP, if it can, I'm pretty much set for what the laptop will be needed for, if not, then I'll need an FTP app...

This is awesome, I can sit in the family room, watch TV or the kids play a game or something, all while actually getting work done.

I went out today and got a little USB powered wireless mouse which makes it way more productive. I don't mind the laptop keyboard, but the little pointer pad crap I hate...

Right now I am sitting here watching some goofy SciFi movie while working on a new web site for a local golf course...cool.

Hmmm, if it's an ftp app you need, you could take a look at Bitvise Tunnelier. It might be a bit more than you need as it's an SSH Client with SFTP capability. I use it with my file server here at home, and when I'm working with the net-admin at work. (he's the one who got me on it) It's a nice app. Lot of features, easy to use for the basic stuff. It's a pretty useful little tool. Very handy when dealing with linux servers remotely :D

From what I read this needs to be run along with the install of the OS but it strips Vista clean selectively.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I've spent hours as dB stated yanking the crap out manually from Vista on several laptops so far and there is more that could be striped out if I were not afraid of their warnings about doing so.

Vista is admittedly an over weight hog even stated so by Microsoft's own executives.

I am just running my laptop in the "classic" theme...it gets rid of transparancies, fade ins and outs the goofy new menu system and all that, saves loads of memory...now I need to find where I can disable the stupid "administrative authorization" for every damn thing I do...man...they think they'll make it more secure by asking for permission more often...

Oh, and Aptana is better than Eclipse, it's a fork of Eclipse, I like it better, seem more logically set up by default...and has FTP built in, not sure if Eclipse did...so far nothing but Vista and a bunch of freeware...and I should be able to do anything I need for my business work.

Bitvise Tunnelier sounds interesting though, I will check that out for sure. Thanks for the tip!

Schweet. I have an HP DV9310 that I use for work (I add another monitor, keyboard, and mouse when I'm in the office).
Nice units.
Vista is a pain.

I don't think Vista is as bad as many have been making it out to be, but the additional security prompts are a PITA.

I think for dummies it can help them understand when a website etc. is actually trying to modify their system, but to turn it off you simply disable "User Account Control" and then all is pretty normal.

Due to the fact that it is an on\off type deal vs. many different settings I don't mind that they included it.

oh, sure I don't mind browser warnings for malicious intent like FireFox does, it's the prompts every time I try to uninstall or install software that it got annoying...that said, since I am pretty set up now, perhaps it won't matter much.

So sure, now that I get on my new system, in a dev platform I am not completely sure how it works I have a bunch of client requests for changes...ARGH! Trial by fire I guess...

I am very thankful for FireFox's bookmark export/import function now tho...and a DVD burner so I could move my 3 GB of web sites from PC to PC easily...

I gotta say this, GIMPShop is pretty cool, adds some logic to GIMP, which is otherwise a pretty convoluted tool as far as usability goes. GIMPShop helps, not a lot, but enough.

I recently had to reinstall Vista due to a persistant trojan I picked up (yeah, fat lot of good UAC did there eh?) and I ended up leaving the menus in Vista mode instead of my usual instant changing to classic view.

I have to say that I do like Vista's start menu. The main menu turns out to be a most recently used programs list that I can now use to replace my usual custom toolbar and links to my favorite proggys, and its easy enough to get to my user folders (downloads, music, etc) and also to control panel.

The UAC thing has to go though. It proved itself to be totally useless to me since it still allowed a trojan to install itself and who knows what else without so much as a prompt. Great going guys...pffffft. All it is is a nuisance.

But man the baseline RAM usage of Vista is pretty big. I have 2GB of RAM and right after booting, about 40% of that is spoken for. I though that XP was a hog!
