OK, I'll be the 1st person to agree that Ike Turner is probably the last person deserved of a humanitarian award. But he is worthy of acknowledgment for his work as a producer/talent scout for both Modern records and Sun records. It was Ike tuner that made it possible for Elmore James, Howlin Wolf, BB King, Muddy Waters and Little Milton to name a few. This was all before Chess records, which later grabbed most of these guys. Ike was a behind the scenes genius in the industry at the time. Maybe Ike wasn't a nice guy, but music might have been very different without him.

I had to add this (irony) If Ike Turner had also been a nice guy its very possible that he would have been known as the father of rock & roll. It was Sam Phillips that called Ike's recording of "Rocket 88" the 1st rock and roll recording.

True; but James Brown hit his wife with a lead pipe and he's still known as the Godfather of Soul...

OK, I'll back Bluesdues on Ike as well.

Not supporting his tyrant ways or anything. But he was as Bluesdues stated a very powerful force in what we now take for granted. He did pave the way for many, but also crashed down hard on many as well.

In the end, yes he was a cranked out lost soul. But in his early days he was a working mans player.

If we judged all men based on how they treated women or the drugs they consumed, we wouldn't have much art or music.

Two cents but true.

Yep, even the baddest of the bad either wrote or produced some great music.

And that is a surprize? Not really, although at 76 I would have thought he might have grown out of it.
