I need a new guitar, but don't have a lot of money to spend, and I've seen advertisements for new dean guitars for around 150 or so... are these any good or like on par with a fender squier

Dec 11, 2007 01:41 am i'd personally put Dean's entry level guitars above the squires (quality upon arrival wise)....
granted the folks store is not a fender dealer, so i'm not sure how they ship, but i DO know for fact, Dean ships their guitars in tune, and set up ready to play...EPICALLY their acoustics (granted that has nothing to do with their electrics)
that said, if you want 2 or 3 single coil pickups, fender has got it...
go for tone before quality....it's far easier to setup/adjust for minor flaws than it is to fix bad tone....and when it comes to tone (espically clean) i still think fender has dean beat.

Dec 11, 2007 01:55 am I can't speak too much for Dean electrics, as I've never even put fingers on an electric guitar in my life, but I have a Dean Eandes acoustic and in my mind if a company can build an awesome acoustic, their electrics (I ***-u-me) ought to be worth your while. I've had my Eandes for about 2 years now and the only complaint I have is the action/ fret buzz, no doubt from 2 years of giging out and neglect on my part. I still choose this guitar over my Martin for recording because of its rich tone and transparency, as well as I've never had to have the intonation set on this acoustic- and I've played festivals in 30 degrees one day and a gig in 90+ degrees the next. In my opinion, from what I believe to be the more discerning side of guitar builds, I'd say a Dean is a sure bet. My piezo with built in tuner has never let me down, always true 440 whenever referenced, and I got it for 350$, as opposed to my Martin, which has gone back 5 times since I bought it, once to the factory, the other four for routine intonation/ neck set issues. I can't speak for the electric electronics I can say, but to me, Dean is a sure buy. Also, this is my fourth Eandes model, others were vanquished by retarded drunkards, or in one case, an extreme accident which we will not speak of, lol. Two thumbs up on my end.
Dec 11, 2007 01:58 am agreed!
i've been so impressed with Dean's "low-end" line...ESPICALLY their acoustics (am i repeating myself?) they genuinely put care and time into making quality instruments (even on their cheapest models) and naturally i'd assume they did the same for their electrics, but you canny wack the strat tone!
Dec 11, 2007 02:00 am wow dean above martin acoustics! i gotta admit i'm not surprised at all...dean acoustics are very well-made instruments.

Dec 11, 2007 02:08 am Well, on stage I'd choose my Martin any day now, because of the body style and the tonewoods reaction with the piezo/ internal mic mix. But for micing in studio applications, my Eandes is made of 100% bookmatched rosewood, which sounds amazing. I'll put a picture of it up for ya in a couple days, it looks amazing too. It's been through hell and only has one minor blemish and still sounds awesome.
Now if I had my old Martin D-1 Rosewood/ Sitka, it would easily over-ride the Dean, but of all the guitars I've ever had, it's easily the most reliable.

Dec 11, 2007 07:43 am There's the Rondo site, with Agile guitars. I think TC just picked up a tele, yes?
I've heard some good stuff about them.

Dec 11, 2007 10:08 am I bought the Squier.
I've been very fortunate with my Squier purchases. I have a strat and a tele and they are both amazing.
I've played countless that were just junk.
I've played American Fenders that were junk.
Luck of the draw...
I am lusting after those Aguile guitars though.
Dec 11, 2007 10:30 am I just bought two guitars from rondomusic.com
Fantastic prices, tons of options and great customer service.
I would highly recommend the SX (cheaper) and Agile lines. Plus look at their b-stock which can give you some real deals.
If you buy from the link on my website then all the better

Dec 11, 2007 10:32 am Here's the details on my guitars
I received my two guitars. An SX Tele and AL-2000 (B stock though I can't find the blemish).
I've had the new guitars setup etc now. They are doing well. A friend recommended chrome wound strings so I put them on the LP. They are fantastic, very smooth and full, they are 12's also which is bigger than I usually use, so I highly recommend chrome flat wound strings.

Here's a list of what the guy did
LP (which was buzzing)
* Oil Freboard
* Reslot Nut (for larger strings
* Loosen Truss Rod
* Adjust intonation
* Adjust pickup height
Tele
* Adjust String Height
* Correctly set the string radius
* Tighten Truss Rod
* Adjust intonation
They are very nice now :)

Dec 11, 2007 10:41 am As with any guitar in this price range, like TC mentioned above, quality control is spotty at best. Be sure to PLAY anything you plan on buying because one may be a gem, the next may be a lemon. If you can't play before you buy, make sure that wherever you buy from has a good return policy so you can send back any lemons.

Dec 11, 2007 12:01 pm It's been raining all night and all day, but the temperature has been right at or above freezing so it hasnt been too bad. My family in Oklahoma is is trouble though...they're getting the worst of it.
I'm working from home today, cozied up by the fire, pretending to work (mostly playing the latter levels of Elder Scrolls:Ovlivion hehehe..shhhhh, don't tell anybody!)
Thanks for asking though!
Dec 11, 2007 12:04 pm Yeah, a guy on another forum I hang at is in Oklahoma, said his sisters are staying with him until they get power back, which could be for 10 more days...power lines broke under the weight of the ice and all that.
Wicked...we were supposed to get a wicked storm, looks like it swung further south then they originally planned.

Dec 11, 2007 09:39 pm Tadpui, you're into Oblivion? My youngest (15) is into it. I just picked up the latest expansion for him, Shivering Isles I think it is.
And don't worry, I won't say a word.

Dec 13, 2007 02:21 pm My friends' son used to go down into some caves in England to do a live D&D type thing. Very odd costumes...
The only "game" I'd really want to experience live would be RIVEN. That would be cool.

Dec 13, 2007 03:26 pm I'd sign up for MechWarrior sessions. Driving one of those things would be WAY Cool!
Just as long as nobody was shooting at me =).
Dec 13, 2007 03:28 pm I'd like to sign up for Hitman for a bit...

Dec 13, 2007 08:10 pm Decent which Mech Warrior was copied after would be my choice. The mech suit was also a time travel suit.
Hitman, are you serious or just jerkin chains here? That is one violent game. Cool but violent.
If I really could have one choice it would have to be Need for Speed Underground 2 or Pro Street.

Dec 14, 2007 11:40 pm Yep, it always made me dizzy playing that game too long. For its day the graphics were pretty killer and the 3D stuff was just getting started.
The other thing with Decent was the control. There were far to may things to do in that early stage of PC video games.

Dec 15, 2007 09:14 pm it's not a bad little guitar for someone who doesn't know much about guitars really. It sounds good to me, so I play it.
