Graphics card problems

I'v brought a graphics card (3D Prophet radeon) and installed it. However at the startup screen when the ASUS motherboard logo should appear I just get multicolored dots all over the screen and nothing else. The computer is making all the right noises but not the right pictures! Any ideas on what I should do?

Many thanks

Nick

Did you have onboard video before? What is the exact type/model of video card? Depending on the type of card, it may have disabled your onboard video. Are you hoping to use two monitors?

There is a 32mb graphics card in the motherboard. The new card is a Hercules 3D Prophet 9000 PCI. I am hoping to use two monitors in the future, thats why i bought it, but only have one at the moment.....

did you install the drivers? That sounds like it is using incorrect driver settings. Although Windoze should have picked it up and at least given you a lower screen rez and then you could go in and adjust from there.

Ah! The ASCII Screen of Doom!"

Does it go away during POST?... mine always have...

If it continues it's usually a heat issue with the graphics card... or the card is bad. Make sure nothing is overclocked...

It's usually not a driver issue because it will occur even before POST.... during the BIOS boot screen.

Hmmm it doesn't go away!! The computer seems to boot but the screen stays weird. I left the case open and tried to keep the card as cool as possible, but still the same, although the card didn't feel hot to the touch at all when i took it out. Is it worth trying a different PCI slot? I've never had problems with this one before, I normally have a firewire in this one that I connect my audio card to.

Also when i restarted the do-you-want-to-start-in-safe-mode-or-normal-mode-screen appeared.

I would say it's likely the card is bad... I didn't look it up earlier... but I haven't seen a PCI video card for years! The thing's probably 5 years old...

Actually looking at it now and I guess it really is a PCI, not PCIe card! Yeah those things are dying out...can you find an AGP version of that card locally? They do exist (AGP 4x), so if your computer has an AGP slot then I'd definitely opt for that.

Otherwise, definitely try different slots and see if it makes a difference.

Or try booting up with the on-board graphics chip, install the drivers for your 3D prophet, then shut down, install the card, and boot up. Normally it happens like Noize says, where it'll at least give you a low-res picture until you install the drivers and adjust the resolution yourself.

Could be a bad card, but that's not a very common thing.

Yeah, if your audio is running over the PCI bus and your video is too...ARGH...asking for choking...

keep in mind... when installing graphics cards or really anything to your computer... make sure one arm is touching the case at all time... this will act as grounding and prevent static built up... which can result in a fryed graphics card... i speak from experience lol.

Don't listen to him...before working on your PC run your dehumidifier for a day or so, then rub your sock feet on the carpet floor going to your work bench then first thing touch the motherboard.

Works every time :-)

... and I find that the magnetic tips screw drivers help a lot with the tiny screws...especially when they fall around the hard drives...

I never unplug mine when working on em.

It makes it kind of like playing that old game Operation. But the only thing that buzzes if I touch something bad is me.

I had one like that, lots of purdy colors but no image, all happened before OS load. Most likely a bad card.

mmm... magnetic screwdrivers rock.

I just used one this morning while upgrading my laptop and desktop to 2gb of ram apiece. =P

No idea if it made either of them faster because my laptop is CPU limited at this point. sigh. =/

Are you sure you got the card seated properly? Sometimes you gotta be a bit rough on those cards to get them seated right.
