Sweet christmas present!

So I'm planning a trip to the US to pick up a trashed Pontiac Firebird/Corvette and bring it back to NZ for my dads x-mas present. And after I finish my degree I'll crash with him we'll restore it before I leave home for good etc. etc. Father son bonding :-D.

Since you guys are the ONLY people I know from the states I was wondering if you could educate me on:

The places to look for a rolling chassis/Project Car

Rules about purchasing a car in the states.

And if anybody has imported/exported cars before, any info is appreciated!

Oh, and any other info you can think of!

I'm pretty flexible as to where in the states to look and I'm looking to spend max $4,000 US.

Cheers!

Import tax is something you'd need to look at.
It's called a Tariff in Oz and can be HEFTY!

The year model of the car will make a huge difference in price. What years are you thinking of buying.

Early 70's. Any later than 85 or something and I have to convert it to right hand drive for NZ lol.

Got everything on the NZ side sorted, just need to get the ownership paper info and the shipping figured out. Am now a licensed importer! lol. Oh, and I've changed my mind to a mustang fastback. Think my dad'll love it :-D.

If anybody cares, you have to provide ownership papers, invoice for car and shipping, bill of lading, register as an importer, and have it fumigated when it hits the shores.

I'm thinking of using DAS auto shippers, just cause they're affiliated with ebay. Anybody got any other suggestions?

So when you buy a car in the US, what papers do you transfer or sign or whatever to prove ownership? Is it called a certificate of title or something?

Thanks,

it shouldn't be much... but you'll have to call the title administration in whatever state you're dealing with to get specifics... and you're local one...

No ID is required to purchase a vehicle usually... The seller 'signs off' and has their signature notarized... then the buyer gets assigned on that title... then that 'assigned title' can be used to get temporary tags and to apply for a title in your name.

I am not sure however if you need anything other than an assigned title if you're just shipping it out.

If the vehicle has a 'salvage title' ie was junked by an insurance company... or stolen and recovered... it is illegal to drive until it is inspected and assigned a 'rebuilt salvage' title... so that shouldn't effect you either...

CS, I will assume if you are set on the Mustang you won't want to go past 1970 unless you don't mind the slightly squared off units they built in the early seventies before they chopped the thing off into some mutated midget in 1974 and stuffed a 4 banger or a V6 into the thing and called it the Mustang II.

Wow the was one long sentence. I can't believe I just did that.

Noize. Yup, I'm gunning for a 67-69, but they're like $4000 for a complete rusty wreck! Me thinks I'm going to have to start thinking more realistically hehe.

Thanks Zek, that clears that up. I think I only need the assigned title.

Oh, and if anyones interested I got quoted a base price of $2200 for shipping.

Hey CS, I just saw a black firebird trans-am for sale on the way to work this morning.

The one like Burt Reynolds drove in Smoky and the Bandit (which I just saw again last month, BTW).

Even had the hood scoop on it. Sweet!

Here in Michigan, the owner signs his name as seller on the back of the title (green sheet) and gives it to you. You then take it to the Secretary of State office, and they re-issue the title to you. They'll give you a temp title, and then send you a new green title in the mail.

I can't remember if you need a license, but it would probably help to have a picture ID when you get it titled.

I'm not sure how it'd work with overseas owners, but I'm sure it's been done before.

man, if you are looking into f-body at all (firebird/transam type) don't go past 69...the 60's were the bomb, 70's and later are so cliche'...same with vette's.

DB, yeah, I agree totally. The corvettes are a little too much in the flashy department for me though. Still looking at the firebirds as well, but jesus, those 69 fastback GT's look soooooo good.

PJK, wicked info, thanks man. I'd be pretty keen to see some pics if possible :-D. But is it restored all ready?

I think it's in basic shape. Looks pretty stock from drive-by glance.

I think those cars are awesome platforms for some real killer build-ups.

I agree they're kinda played out, but they still have a strong pull (style-wise).

I gotta say too though, cars up here in the northern part of the country suffer from the dreaded 'salt corrosion' disease. Salting the roads in winter really eat the body metals quick.

I'll check the quarter panels, door panels, and behind the tires for rust starts.

I'm heading out shortly, i'll get some pix.

1967 Mustang fastback with a 351 Cleveland in it. That was my first mustang. Turned a 1/4 mile in a pinch over 9 seconds. Those were a rare car with that engine back then. Even rarer now, wish I would have kept it.

My reason for buying it, Steve McQueen drove one in the movie Bullet.

Then did the 68 Mustang coupe with a 302 in it. High RPM and tricked it with a fancy suspension from California. It was called the Mulholland kit, named after the twistiy turny downhill run in CA.

My buddy did a 69 fastback as well. That is my next favorite to the 67.

In the early 70's CS. Like I said, I wish I still owned the 67, it was my favorite.

I will take a gander on the local adds here and see if anything is around. My guess is that South Dakota and Montana are were you will find the most usable and repairable ones.

Hell yeah, they are easily the best looking cars I have ever seen. Market value for a pristine fastback GT seems to be around 80-100 grand! Crazy.

Awesome, thanks man. Ebay's all I really got to find these things lol. Are there any online car classified's or anythin' over there?

CS,
Auto Trader is the biggest and it's nationwide.

You might try recycler.com too, they have a lot more than just cars though.

vehix.com is also a great one. I think it needs you to feed it an area's zip code though I haven't tried it yet. although just taking a quick peek it looks as though you can search simply by model.

I know there is one that will narrow things down as you go along, I just can't remember the name of it at the moment.
