My brother (who lives in Minneapolis) told me about this. It happened at the Golf Club where my dad was a member before he died.

Can you say "Law Suit"?

That is terrible! An accident like that should NEVER happen. Being in the hot tub business I am very familiar with the proper way to cover a drain. She's lucky to be alive. A lot of people drown because of this kind of thing.

A properly covered drain will not allow suction to build up.

Poor kid.

How much suction does it take to suck the guts out of a six year old?

I've heard of such things, but I suspected they may be urban legends.

I guess the Mythbusters don't have to cover that one now.

I would think that it wouldn't take much suction at all.

All of our tubs have at least 2 drains and they are always on opposite walls. We even have drain covers that will not allow hair to get sucked in which is another problem. Imagine someone reaching down to grab something that they dropped in the water and their hair gets sucked into the drain effectively holding their head under water.

I've heard of new regulations that would require pumps to shut down when blockage is detected. I don't know how effective this would be with the "hair" example above though as there really isn't much of a blockage for that to happen.

Yep, she is going to have to be fed through a tube and wear a colostomy bag the rest of her life.

The sad part is that it easily could have been prevented if the lazy person responsible for keeping everything in working order and inspecting that stuff would have done their job. A buddy runs a company that deals in pool equipment and chemicals for schools and clubs and the like. He said there is a mandatory inspection that is supposed to be done daily especially in small pools that cater to children to guard against just such a thing happening. The cover is supposed to be bolted down, how the hell did it come unbolted? There will obviously be a huge lawsuit on this for sure.

300 pounds per square inch of pressure, over a one inch area. that's how much it takes!

i shudder to think that i played around these things when i was a kid. i'm not really sure it makes a difference if you're a kid or an adult with a psi like that...

This reminds me of a story I read a couple years back where some dude got off on sticking his unit into a return tube in a pool, he like used it to got himself off...in one hotel it got stuck and he could get it out...never said anything until a hotel attendant noticed he hadn't moved from that one location for on hour or two so he asked, then the guy told him what was going on.

Talk about embarrassing...yeesh.

Embarrassing doesn't even begin to describe it.

But what was I gonna do, stay there in the pool with my junk all stuck like that?

Yes, I thought so too until I was given a lifetime ban from all Holiday Inns.

Yes, rather an ironic twist but I feel the hotel gave me the shaft.

"Hey, shepherdsam, you're walking a little funny today. Overexert yourself?"

"No, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night."

Yes I was referring to the guy not the girl but I'm sure most of you that know me know that I wouldn't make light of such a horrible accident.
