mandy moore is on the ferguson show right now. i've never heard her or listened to her. but listening to her speak, she's just--quite obviously--a normal, regular girl. a dippy sort of person.

how does this happen?

you all work harder than her, i'd bet. dipsy peeps aren't fantastic songwriters--you can always tell when someone's fundamentally vacant.

i have a hard time understanding how the world works.

tangent: ferguson really is a pretty good talk show host. good monologues sometimes.

in a word...marketing...

as for "fundamentally vacant"....i think this should be added into our daily dialect...what a good description!

I have no idea who mandy moore is but I think the answer is obvious. It's all about sexual potential. At this moment in time the music industry has become an extention of the porn industry. When Homer's kid Jessica blew the half time show I asked a young guy that drums for me sometimes. His only comment was "did you hear the little 'screetch' she did at the end...She's HOT". Land on any 'music' page msn, comcast, etc. What do you see? A line up of what would have been considered bimbo's not long ago. It's difficult to find out what they sing or play, but it's no problem at all to know what they wear.

Just the way it is. It's demeaning to the musician, but bottom line it's entertainement and that is what the public will resopond to and spend money on at this time.

Nothing new. Fifty years ago musicians saw shake and bake guitar players making millions while they couldn't get heard. Now if you don't have large brests and a small butt you don't get stage time. Entertainment. Nothing more.

easy answer, cute young girls sell tickets to young boys that want her, old boys that want her, and young girls that wanna be like her.

Old fat guys like me sell no tickets to anyone for any reason.

It was Ashlee that blew the Orange Bowl.

Moore...well... of the pop princesses... at least can do other things than be in tabloids...

Of all the current teen female stars that inevidibly wind up being role models, Moore is certainly a decent one the way it seems...she seems like a good kid.

Ashlee, whatever gets said, I still like her spunk.

"Old fat guys like me sell no tickets to anyone for any reason."

--you gotta capitalize on whatcha gots! like tom waits. i just wish people placed more value on music itself.

it makes ya burn to see some of these peeps up there on a talk show, the cavalier attitude you can see when they talk about their next album. the tone of voice as they talk about it can sometimes seem like the same one you'd use when telling a story about the day's shopping trip. she's being billed as having contributed to the songwriting. i don't really believe it when i hear that kind of tone of voice. maybe she picked a melody note here and there or something.

Well, there you get back to the art vs the marketing...it's never about the music or anything except among musicians and few others...ya gotta sell the person to sell the product these days.

I don't know Mandy Moore, so I can't attest to her music prowess, but I know a few people have surprised me over the years that ya think are just a pretty face or whatever but actually do have some musical talent...

Sad but true. IMO you can blame this on MTV. Prior to MTV you actually based your opinions on the music. Imagine that. A world where music is "listened" to and not "looked" at...

yeah of course. i dont know how she sounds either. total pre-judgment on my part. her song was on in the background last night, but i didnt notice it. the interview, though...it just seeemed like she was barely involved with her own stuff. i dunno, just a vibe.

BH got it, it's a dead horse to beat, but I'll keep beating it, when music was taken to televsion like MTV and VH1 did, the entire business and art of music changed...some for the good, sometimes videos are very cool and add to the whole picture Dire Straits Money for Nothing video I love and thought it was interesting, Peter Gabriel's video are worthy, adding a new element of weirdness to his music, but usually it's just stupid like many videos from peeps like 50 cent and all them that just shows him looking cool and doing drugs with trashy chicks hanging all over him or pop princesses being showered with attention of blowing off the boyfriend the dissed her...those do nothing...

In my opinion...

It's all about marketing these days. I actually had a radio DJ friend of mine tell me that music was something to fill the time between commercials because music doesnt pay the bills. Music was just something to draw you in to hear the ads. So much for art huh?

Sounds about right to me Diemusik. Plus they have to pay to play the music.

My wife use to be in radio sales and one thing she would say about the difficulty in selling ad space is that she is really just selling "air".

What this has to due with the topic at hand, I have no idea. Oh well. Carry on.

But.....

Walter Trout - Fantastic guitar player. Not easy on the eyes, really.
Canned Heat - Cool band, man. FUGLY!
Coheed And Cambria - Cool, and new, and exciting. Not that attractive, are you guys?..
Dire Straits (mentioned above) - Nice tunes, lads. You don't really wanna look at 'em, do you?
All the shoegaze bands - Fun stuff. Not pretty.

So, turn off the sound and enjoy the pretty girls.
Make the best of a bad deal.

There ya go TallChap!

If you're in the mood for girlz look to mainstream media. If you're in the mood for music dig a little deeper on the net. It's all about knowing where to look for what you want.

None of this is news. Vincent Furnier had a great interview on NPR where he talked about the creation of Alice and the show. He did everything possible to alianiate himself from 'parents' to draw the bucks out of the kids. I will say this, he was a lot more creative that today's air humping bimbo's, but the concept is the same.

A few weeks ago we went and got our band a set of brests to stick up front. Gigs are on the rise already. Ya wanna go to work tomorrow make the boss look good today. Sometimes you have to do that and your job if you want to keep working.
