I am currently looking for some guitar pedals mainly to record an album, and i'm not really into heavy distortion or anything that psychidelic, so what are some pedals that would give me some kind of unique sound?, i mainly play agarage/50's/folk/punk style of rock music

he wants a unique sound though. basic fuzz or overdrive should maybe be your base. and then twist it up with just one more effect, doled out in a very small way.

you only want a few pedals!?!?!?!!? but... how...

hehe, anyhow i think most guitatrists needs atleast one OD pedal and one delay/reverb unit. That should put u in the bases covered category. If you want to sound "unique" without being psychedelic.. maybe a chorus? just to give a little fat and differnece to your tone at points. I saw a guy that had a very nice unique sound and was play ur described styles of music, he just had a ProCo Rat 2 and a Boss Reverb/Delay pedal. If your not looking for alot of distortion, maybe the Boss super overdrive, or a tubescreamer (maxon clone is fine). When i hear older school of punk rock styles i cant help but think MXR distortion plus, or any of those MXR pedals, very nice distortion with a good level of control. I recommned the the Boss Reverb/Delay pedal, reverb will be great even in a minimal rig like that, just to give you space and some flavor when your going clean.

If you do get a chorus... cant go wrong with a EHX small clone.

Uh, at least one more time . . .

It's nigh well impossible to recommend something
here; who knows what it might be that you're looking for? I bought a junko Ross distortion
pedal years ago, and that thing is fantastic . . .
but that's just me, and you or anyone else might
think it sounds awful (maybe). If you can play
really well, the sound will find you. Just try
whatever you can get your hands on.

Oops, looks like I had a post disappear.

Condensed version:
An overdrive and/or a fuzz box are great ways to spice up your distorted tones. use them in combination with the distortion from your amp.

A wah is a good one that'll come in handy.

And I love my compression/sustainer. More sensitivity without more distortion. Great for soloing.

I think the best advice would be to go to your local music store and try various pedals. That said, if I were only going to buy a couple of pedals it would be an overdrive/distortion pedal and a chorus pedal. More than that and personally I think your better off looking at combo pedals such as the Boss GT8 or the Boss ME series (for a less expensive alternate), simply because individual pedals add up quickly along with battery usage, cables etc. As a bonus you'll have virtually unlimited possibilities for tone.

I absolutely love my Fulltone Full-Drive II pedal. It really accentuates your guitar and amp sound without getting too drive heavy. Its a very musical pedal.

My other favorite pedals are the ToneFactor Analog Filter and the Hellbilly overdrive. Both again very musical pedals.

I'm not a fan of the Boss overdrive pedal. Its a little noisy and harsh.

I've heard lots of good things about those Fulltone pedals. I'm going to have to give one a try one of these days.

The one pedal that I'm lusting over the most is the BlackFinger compressor by Electro Harmonix. Its a full-voltage tube compressor (not a starved plate design). It's killing me, I have to see how that pedal sounds. I've heard that it doesn't give crazy sustain like the Boss CS3 which would kind of suck but I could use it for so many things!

Give a look to Electro Harmonix's website. They have tons of sweet high-quality effects.

One thing that I could advise is not to buy effects just for the sake of buying them. If you have a particular sound in mind, then definitely go find whatever it takes to bring it to life. But most people that use effects just for the heck of it end up with some really atrocious tone.

That's my main beef with multi-FX and modelling units...they seem to trigger something in their user's brains that makes them think that tons of delay, reverb, flange, chorus, distortion, etc. all sound good at the same time. Just because you can doesn't mean you should :D
