i want a cheap laptop so that i can do my editing work out and about town. the only thing i need the computer to do is run a web browser and microsoft word. it can be old but not too slow.

can anyone recommend a course of action? i want to spend no more than 200 bucks!

I doubt even a hot one would go that cheap...

I think you'd be surprised what $200 can fetch on eBay. That would be my avenue of pursuit, however I know that folks around here have mixed feelings toward that particular site.

heh, reminds me of the dilbert cartoon, giving the boss an etch-a-sketch as a laptop.

Then telling him to hold it upside down to reboot it.

Good stuff.

Sorry I wasn't more helpful, try openoffice instead of MS word (office). It's free, and works a treat.

a computer is likely one of the last things I'd ever buy from ebay, check out www.craigslist.com maybe.

I'd have a hard time buying one unseen, computers are something so easy to get screwed with...but with something like Craigslist at least you can look locally and touch it, look at the specs and whatnot before shelling out the cash.

maybe i'll just buy a good mac laptop on some installment plan. i'm so new to mac, though, that i wouldn't know what to get. what is the thing to have? if i go this route, i guess i'd want something sort of powerful. maybe something powerful enough to do music on at some point. i dunno.

forty, do you have something like Micro Center www.microcenter.com/ near you. I have seen them do run of the mill laptops now for as little as $299.00 after rebate. Sometimes the catch is you have to open one of their store charge accounts but its worth it to get it that cheap, then just chop up the card once its paid off.

Do a google and they have a store locater as well. Your in San Fran now aren't you? There is some outlet that is similar to them that does all kinds of electronics as well as computer gear.

forty is in frisco? I thought he was in LA...

whatever, the main point is i would avoid fry's like the plague. they sell so much open box and returned stuff like it's new, it's ridiculous. I know people who have worked there, and they tell me horror stories.

If you do buy something for extreme discount (they have great deals on occasion), make sure you're getting new product.

coolo, I didn't know that. My son Robbin gets some of his stuff there and just talks about the good deals. Maybe he hasn't gotten a lemon from there yet. Or maybe he is just being smart and looking things over good before he busy them.

Yes, 5 years ago I bought a "NEW" printer from Fry's. I asked 4 times to confirm. When I got home, it had a half used ink cartridge, a broken case and a note from the previous owner saying "this aint new, don't believe them"

Then I had to spend 2 hours returning it.

I have literally not bought a thing from Fry's since.

www.tigerdirect.com/email...CCODE=WEM1355AA

tigerdirect 400$ Acer laptop. may not be a treat for audio work, but for basics, 400 bones ain't nothing to sneeze at.

* edit * bad reviews, caveat emptor *

I've seen quite a few lower priced laptops lately...like you said, they are nothing I'd use for multimedia work, but for a cheap PC to sit on my patio and surf the net, check email, write code and junk it'd work.

find a friend that just bought a new laptop to replace their old one (or is thinkin' about it) and wave a large stack of small bills in front of 'em....it's like fishing.
