The ultimate remote control

If you are anything like me, you have been looking for the ultimate remote control for your entertainment center. Every one I try, I get excited about, but, then there is one device it doesn't work with, so back it goes to the store.

A few days ago I got one a friend referred me to, the URF 9910 of the "One For All" remote control brand. www.amazon.com/gp/redirec...s_1%3Fie%3DUTF8 This thing I have seen but always blew off cuz it only cost $30 so of course it won't work.

Holy cow, it works with all my devices, I can program macro's into it that wuill remember sequences of up to 15 buttons each, and, best of all, it can connect to my computer via the JP1 cable (not included) and be programmed with some free software from the JP1 project. www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1009 so, when the batteries wear out, I don't spend ages reprogramming my devices and macros, I just hook it up, and download the profile again.

And it works! I have all my devices programmed in, I press the M1 button (Macro 1) and it turns on my reciever, turns on my satellite, turns on my TV, flips to the reciever, puts it in pro logic surround mode then goes into home theatre mode aso different areas of the remote work related devices. Press M2 and it shuts all the devices off.

Now, if you need a remote, consider this among the highest of recommendations.

Hey that sounds pretty cool dB. I need a remote that's capable of controlling my Tivo and TV. Tivo's universal remote doesn't have a code for my cheapo TV so we're condemned to using 2 remotes. I'll have to check this one out and see if its got the right stuff!

The one weakness I believe it may have is an issue with working with DVR's, but, I believe if you search the JP1 project forums you can find a solution...I don't recall, I don't use DVR's so I don't recall for sure...but, I was like you, a batch of gear hodge-podged together, at least one piece wouldn't work with any remote...

I took a look at it and think it will work great for me system in th eliving room down here. Since I have 6 remotes for all the stuff I would prefer running it with just one. And the ability to program macros would work splendid for either running just part or all of the componants in my system. Hopefully it would work with my digital cable box, but it appears as though it should.

And the price is right as well.

That's too much technology for me. I'll stick to one remote for the CD player, one for the Reciever, one for the TV thank you.

One day, many years from now, technology will advance to the point where we can command our personal entertainment devices by thoughts alone.

And then, there will be some old-school S.O.B. hollering, "HEY! Back in MY day we had to reach for the coffee table and actually push a BUTTON!"

that'll be me. I can't figure out remotes. When I go to my parents house and try to watch their tv it's insane... I have no idea how to even turn it on. "Dad, how to get this pos to turn on and go to cartoon network?" "Why you still watchin' cartoons at 21" "It's adult swim... that makes it okey. Now how do I turn it on?" "All you gotta do is *some karate type stuff*" "So basicly, vodoo..."

My new phone can use voice commands to do all that I need. I use a bluetooth while drivng and simply say what I want the phone to do. Its nice and conveniant to not have to mess about with buttons and such. You dont want to do that in a crowded mall though, people think youre nuts just talking to thin air.

Love the bluetooth headsets. I bought the wife one for her car for when she's driving. It just makes me feel a little safer that way as far as getting distracted. Push button, say name, talk :)

My biggest problem has never been using multi-remotes, but figuring out how to program the damn things. This one I mentioned has a little two-line digital display with various messages and such...plus, as soon as my JP1 cable comes, then there is a software interface for it...w00t.

Using them should be pretty simple, hit the button for the device you want to control, then control it...pretty simple.

dB, did you happen to check out the Kameleon 8 One For All has as well? Holly crap that thing is cool, and not cheap either. $99.00 for a touch screne remote that I believe is the same function wise as the one you have.

The Kameleon 8 is one I tried and returned, it looked cool but sucked as as far as functionality and usability.

Ya, I am very unsure of those touch screne things. We use some at work and they are not a very durable thing at all. So I would imagine that would be an issue in this house the way the kids chuck stuff around.

Remote controls don't do me a damn bit of good because my darn kids always lose the frickin' things!

Yep, loose em, wreck em or just plain abuse em. I'm about to have my kids do nothing but change channels by hand. They figured out how to reprogram my remote to work on their digital box in the game room. They are all the same box, but differant identity codes throughout the house. And when theirs took a crap they swiped mine and thought I wouldn't notice.

Bad kids!!!!

If it has problems with DVR probably wouldn't work for me, but I'd sure love to find one that would other than the $200 ones. :)

A neighbor has one of those big dollar remotes, it's cool. When I get my basement done I am going to have one that will turn down the lights in the room, drop the screen from the ceiling, etc.

Do some searching at hifi-remote.com or other such communities, I think they found a way to control DVR's with some of these devices, but I am not sure as it doesn't affect me directly.

Yeah I've heard good things about the Sony one but it's $200+, I just can't bring myself to spend that much on a remote, and the wife would probably shoot me.

I'll have to check that out and see if they've found a way to make it work with the Dish DVR.

I got the JP1 cable yesterday...the software app is cool. I quickly downloaded the current settings from the remote into the software, I could page thru all the buttons, what they did, my custom macros and all that...saved it as a profile. Whenever the batteries die, I just put in new ones, plug it in, and download that profile again. I can build new macros, reassign keys and and stuff right in the software...

I'll have to try one. I've been there on the "buy it, and the CD player won't work..."

I have Dish/DVR, so there's a concern there, but on top of that there's the TV, the tuner/amplifier, CD changer, Playstation2 (used as a DVD player too). I don't think the "dual cassette deck" even has one (I know...so 20th century...) I think that had one of those control cables on it.......Barely ever used anyway, so no loss. However, this thingy would relieve my coffee table of a lot of paperweights.

If only the RF part would control my RF dimming system!
