Feb 28, 2006 11:04 pm way too many variables to decipher that one cleanly.
what type of recording? platform? hardware considerations? software considerations?
lots to consider, like, is that to cover all the other things you'll need as well? lots to consider.
are you going serious? or hobby, or home/business kinda thing?
check out el musico's thread about the new studio, you'll see a few macs on there. conversely, sweetwater may make some of the best (i said 'may') pre-built windows offerings.

Mar 01, 2006 02:05 pm UNDER 5,000!?!!?!?!?! so much. or did you mean 500? for $5000 you should spend less on your computer and more on your mic's. I mean (according to your profile) you have some MXL mic, and relaly have a 5000 machine wouldnt help your mixes as much as some better hardware would. Unless of course your planing to use your computer for way more the recording. gaming and such. couter-strike..heh heh.
as far as computers, i'd go with a mac for recording. I personally like them more the pc's for recording, but i really hate them for everything else. they seem smoother, can handle more then most pc's.

Mar 01, 2006 02:30 pm that's kinda why I mentioned the platform question. If you're looking at mac, then you're looking at logic or protools (not sure if nuendo is mac). Any of which is high $$$, whereas a PC can get mucho horsepower, then add 200 or so program to run it all. This also ties into the serious / hobby / home business query. These all weigh against the bottom line.
Then there's the other idea I mentioned, is 5k going to cover everything, or just a computer. like meltdown mentioned, mics can play a large part of a studio, as well as preamps when you start getting spendy.

Mar 01, 2006 07:22 pm Stay away from the Mac. You will pay 2 times or more the price you will pay for an equal PC. As well the software will kill you price wise. Very limited software selection, and most are built around Propriatary architecture for pluggins and such. Which in the end limits what you can get for it.
Sorry to jump on Macs neck but I would never recomend one for someone jumping in head first.

Mar 01, 2006 10:43 pm well, i think for 5000 mac is probably the best. i mean, bang for buck pc all the way, and i love my pc, but money aside, i prefere mac's.

Mar 02, 2006 07:42 am The PC I currently use cost me $350 at Staples... with a couple hundred in upgrades... like swapable drivebays, the extra harddrives, and video card...

Mar 02, 2006 09:23 pm Honestly there was a time when the Mac did outperform the PC especially in the audio/video side of things. I am not sure about the video side, but I know in the audio side that the PC is no longer lagging behind the Mac, in fact I would almost bet it is outperforming the Mac in many ways.
But hey, to each his own I guess. My X bro in law is a Mac freak and he cant figure out the simplest task's on a windows PC.
