I figured I'd start a new thread for this:
In my studio building project, I'm going to have monitors in control room, and probably would like to have a second set, and also speakers in the live room. I'm looking for a nice solution to drive each of these sets easily, and hopefully, cheaply.
I'm not sold on either passive or active monitors, and will be using ESP1010 with 8 analog outs.
Anyone have any clever solutions. I know I can get one of those central stations, Presonus has one, but wondered if anyone's gotten something to work on the cheap. Theirs runs 429 for b-stock at zz. 500$ and $600 with the remote.

Feb 03, 2006 02:21 pm do ya have an extra mixer layin' around? or even a nice stereo reciever?

Feb 03, 2006 02:26 pm hmm, a powered mixer may be a solution, though pricey and large. I don't have any extra stereo receiver, though I was thinking about that idea. I was using one to power my monitors before the house fire, but alas, it's up in smoke now. I may replace it, or I may not.
Feb 03, 2006 02:28 pm I'd just get a speaker splitter and have powered speakers so each set has their own volume setting.

Feb 03, 2006 02:28 pm The more I think about it, the more I think I may build something myself. Something I can switch on the fly (on off on) and also have a momentary switch for the talkback into the live room. Having two sets running at one time may be a trick though.

Feb 03, 2006 02:29 pm hmm, that's a good point too, volumes may be a trick as each set would be different efficiencies.
hmmmmmmmm

Feb 03, 2006 02:30 pm If I use powered speakers like dB says, I could get a small 6 or 8 channel mixer, and send signal to each set of powered speakers on their own.
Feb 03, 2006 02:34 pm How would a mixer help, mixers take many and funnel into one, not taking one and funnel into many...
What you want to do (if I am understanding you correctly) is take the main out of your mixer and run into a signal splitter box before any amplification is done, then you run each line from the splitter to the different rooms, and each room has it's own set of powered speakers, or amp/speaker set.
The cooler way would be to run the talkback over those same lines...

Feb 03, 2006 02:48 pm yeah, you're right. thinking backwards. oop.
that way would get rid of efficiency mismatch, plus impedance mismatch as well.
I'm gonna think on that idea, thanks.
Feb 05, 2006 05:49 am I used a headphone amp to power passive speakers and a DJ mixer to split siignals for active speakers.
