Rackmount Computer Question

So I found a few places that sell rackmount computer chassis and I want to get a 4 space to convert from my tower pc right now. Other than the included fans and power supply, would everything swap over fine? It's an emachines so it's in a pretty small tower right now. I figured a 4 space would be good for the extra room to keep cool and upgrade if needed. But is it something that will cost a lot more than the chassis, fans, and power supply? Thanks in advance!

Well, whther in a rack mount case or not, an eMachine is an eMachine, but it will look cooler :-)

If the motherboard fits the form factor of the case, it should be just fine.

The dimensions of the rack case I want are larger than the current tower the machine occupies, so I guess i'm in the clear. I have a firepod and am planning on getting one more, a compressor, a power conditioner, and maybe a eureka preamp, so I want to put it all in an ata case for transport reasons. All I need is a power supply and fans then?
Haha yeah I know emachines isn't anything to brag about but I put a gig of memory in it and I have a uad card and waves gold bundle and i'm super happy with it's performance/results. I think I should get a good firewire card though. Any reccomendations? Mine is pretty cheap. I have a firepod and i've emailed them about the most compatible one to use and they said that whatever I choose will work fine as long as it's of good quality. What's a good one to swap for? Thanks

My experience with any of the "big box" systems (IE. Dell, EMachines, etc) is that their motherboard form factors are unique to their brand. This is evidently where they make all their change.

You may be able to jury rig it, but it'll be a bit rough as I've come to understand it. Your best bet may be to try to track down a standard ATX motherboard with a good chipset for the processor socket-type you're running now. I don't think you'd need to replace anything else.

I only mention this because I know how miffed I'd be if I shelled out the cash for the rackmount and the motherboard didn't fit. Consider this me saving your coffee from a short flight across the room. =)

Thanks so much for the reply! Do you have any suggestions for a mobo for an amd athlon 2700+ processor? If the stock one doesn't fit I want to have one lined up. Thanks duuuuude.

Depending on your interface, also, but an nForce 3 chipset board is apparently the "king" of the AMD camp at this time (due to nForce 4 problems with PCI-e & SATA vs. the streaming audio requirements on the PCI buss)... but I'm not sure if it'll take a 2700+ processor.

Back to your original post, you'll have to watch the mount points on the E-Machine's motherboard and the ones in the case. Be sure you would not short-out something when/if you mount it.
