Guys

If anyone is inclined, feel free to take a listen to the demo I recorded with my band using:

1) Fostex VF160 for all tracking drums, amps etc
2) Cubase for ALL mixing
3) Mastered in Wavelab/HarBal (not much harbal in to be honest).

www.breverwebdesign.com/dmr/dmrnew/music.html

There are 5 songs there...4 you will have heard before if ye know ma stuff, 1 you woont.

I play lead guitar on all, backing vocals on one and I wrote "Let It Go" , "Just For Me" and co-wrote the others...wrote the music for "Throw Your Hand".

OK, let me know yer thoughts.

Cheers

Coco.

P.S. You will need to scroll down the Ipod to view the last song....also, its a popup window when you click on a song so you may need to allow the pop up or you wont hear the stuff.

Also, the website isnt finished but its getting there :-)

Cheers

throw yur hand-
rock with a tiny edge of punk-without the punk lack of quality. no words of wisdom- this ones dun

let it go- ever heard of oaisis? grabbed me from the start, but the vox seems a little bottomed in the beginin, he comes out when he goes high.
over all, the words get mudded with the rthy guitar me tinks, the bridger is rodger doger, the lead the rthy and the vox are there and clear in the bridge- then the last chorus its muddied again

Said and dun-very british soundin-i cant make out all the words till the 2nd verse though. even with the pickin guitar its hard to make out- those 2 are eq'd too close for me.

these are nitpics- the overall sound ...its way pro! id buy it!

Wow, I'm immpressed Coco! You guys are sounding great. Very tight well played and sung.

On all the songs, I thought they sounded very well mixed, with just maybe a tad too much reverb on the drums although it does lend well to the live sound. I would, I think try boosting the EQ at around 2k or so on the lead vocals to get a bit more definition in them as they do tend to sound a bit muddled, but overall Coco I think you've done great job and the band sound awesome. If I ever get to Scotland I definitley want to see & hear you guys live! :)

TonyD - cheers for the listen bud. Appreciated...

Yah, I agree with you on those vocals...some of the problems I had was with the mic control the singer used (i.e. next to none, some were due to the fact ALL vocals were SM58'd and some were due to the EQ) but you are totally right with saying some high end EQ is a must.

Thats where its lost on some songs, especially Said & Done..I tried to compress to even it out and that was killing it so I had to cut back on the comp to not kill the sound.

"Let It Go" - my friend, I wrote that before Oasis were a (takeover) twinkle in Noel Gallaghers eyes!! hehehehe...I actually had my drummer say "This sounds a lot like an Oasis song....til I told him WHEN I wrote it"...anyways , you're right, in a strange way it sounds Oasis-esque and influenced by them yet at the time when they first come out (or just before) I didnt like em and wrote the song of the cuff, acoustic in one hand and a beer in the other....ahh, the good ole days! Cheers tho bud...much appreciate the comments and useful feedback for sure.

Noize, nae worries buddy. Cheers also for the listen and I'll look forward to yer feedback.

OldDog, good man also for taking the time bud. I appreciate that and agree with your comments about the EQ. I will rework them ALL with some new EQ and see how it sounds (All lead vocals I mean).

Indeed, the singer was also off a little in bits but alas, we were recording using my gear in our rehearsal room (Which is a fully kitted/acoustic treated room in a studio we use) but at £10 an hour, we only had 1 hour to do all those drums and about 3 hours more to do everything else. Total recording time spent on all that was about 5 hours (as I done my overdubs with my guitar at home).

Total time spent mixing and FIXING, I HATE to add it up...HOURS AND HOURS!!!

Anyways, thanks to you all for taking the time and listening/giving feedback...VERY much appreciated here.

OldDog, we're about to start giggin here in Edinburgh, get yerself over on a 3000 mile round trip and I'll shout ya a free (gig) ticket and a beer ;-) !! hehehe

Cheers

Coco.

OK, its time for me to be honest. If I had not heard these songs sung before by you I might have a bit of a differant opinion. But here it is straight away. Your new singer needs to have more power in his voice, especially on Let it Go, Throw your Hand and Said and Done. That just let it rip vocal style you have. Do you have Magneto or Vintage Warmer? I have an idea that just might bring some power into his voice and make it more like yours. And as I have said all along, your voice is what drives those songs and makes them rock. I should clearify and state that is the style and power in your voice as well that give those tunes the huge rock feel that the original versions had.

Dont take this wrong either, I'm not saying the new singer is bad, he is definately not a bad singer at all. I like his voice in the other 2 songs, but it is almost thin sounding compared to yours on those other tunes.

OK, enough bichen. I did like the sound and feel of the original versions, but these have a new life and still rock. The live drums make a big differance, you can almost hear it in the way you are playing the guitar now as well. They give the tunes more power yet. The sound is a very live sound as well, you can hear the space that the kit was played in.

On all around this Town you could ease up a little on the reverb on the singers voice. Maybe use a smaller room reverb or a tight studio reverb.

OK enough for now, I gotta read some of the other posts. I have spent the last 2 hours listening and comparing your old versions with the new ones so I gotta get on with it. Maybe we can hook up in the chat room this weekend uf we both have a bit of time. I've got some stuff I will share with you on these tunes, which by the way I think completely ROCK!

I hate the vocal tone...

It hurts my ears... He sounds all whiney... : )

I really like the mix of Throw Your Hands though. You managed to get the grunt and keep the clarity. V. nice.

I agree that there should be more high end in the vox. I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the reverb either.

IMO he absolutely slaughtered let it go. Sorry, but thats just how I feel. I LOVE the old version, and your vocals! Those delayed drums are just fantastic.

Anyway, sounds great, but theres my two NZ cents.

Hey Noize

Big thanks for the listen to the tunes and the feedback you have given - much appreciated bud.

I agree with ye on it all, the singer actually moaned I had too much verb on his vocals :-) ! hehe. Guess he was probably fair enough...! I agree wit ya, about his power etc and the most annoying thing is - when rehearsing/live etc, he BELTS it out! I guess he just tries to "sing" too much rather than just blasting first and foremost....

I indeed do have magneto I believe...so, if ye have idea, thats grand. I will be working a bit more on this demo before I make any more copies and I Will take into account all your advices (and the rest of ye in this thread).

Need to revisit verb, EQ and some other little things that have been bugging me!

Sanders, yer honesty is always refreshing and if I am honest, I would rather folks were honest so thats all cool.

Inded, its a voice you either like or dont like. I will however, be seeing what I can do for future demos as I am concious that I had em all rush thru their parts a bit TOO fast....a little more time and the takes wouldve been somewhat better but we live, learn and grow I guess.

Anyways, cheers for the listen!

And cheers to ye all.

ROCK ON!

I don't mean to be a bother, but is there a place I could download an mp3? Without installing a plugin...

Go here www.macromedia.com/shockw...mcom/flash.html and grab the pluggin. It is not a big download and installs easily. No system bothers either. Most of us have been using it for years.

Agree with dB though, the flash pluggin is almost a must have these days on the net.

The problem I have with flash is that so many places use it to display advertisements now, like CNN and a number of other news sites. I got tired of it and yanked it... Plus, streaming with my ISP is more like creaking....

Switch to Firefox for a browser. I dont get any popups unless I allow the site to use them, which some sites use good popups.

OK guys

I just got making the biggest *** of myself ever!!!

When I revisited the demo to take on ALL your advices (cheers) I noticed I had no EQ on the main vocals switched on, too much verb (too inserts ;-( on the drums and many other technical fak ups !!!

So, I just remixed the sucka ... proper EQ on vocals, proper verb, moved guitars and drums around and fixed a heap of other crap that was, err, crap!!!

There are some bits that ARE off - but that needs a re-record.

But now, after the remix and a good load of mastering work, I think/hope its WAYYYY better!

The vocals have far more high end now, more power and sit better in the mixes...drums are more powerful too...rhythm guitar has been brought up a smidgen...so much better!

Cheers to ye all and big shout to Noize tae for these patches which I'll also give a run ...

CHEERS AND TA
