Ive got an m-audio delta 1010lt recently and am currently using it along with a behringer mixer, which alows me to use 4 of the 8 analouge inputs on the 1010lt (i.e. L+R out of the behringer, and the 2 XLR inputs on the back of the card) however i would like to be able to use all 8, and to do that i need some sort of pre-amplication to go between mics and the 6 analouge RCA inputs.

in short - i need an 8 channel preamp to go between mics (some needing phantom power if possible) and an m-audio delta 1010lt.

any opinons on which preamp will suite me best?

Focusrite OctoPre and OctoPre LE. PreSonus DigiMax. Studio Projects SP-828. The Studio Projects unit is probably the most straight forward of those I listed.

What Behringer mixer do you have now, and how many XLR inputs with pre-amps?

I had a yamaha mg16/4, which I'll be replacing with the same unit. It worked very well with the 1010lt.

And the more I hear about the yamaha series, the more I like it. there seems to be a large number of people who are quite impressed with the mg preamps. I've heard that the channel EQ is quite good as well, though I used the EQ flat, and mixed EQ in the computer.

the mg16/4 has 8 xlr preamps, along with phantom power, but 16 input channels. Each preamp channel has a channel insert, which I used for tapping signal and feeding that signal to my 1010lt. It worked quite well. Plug a 1/4" jack 1/2 way in (first click) and it takes signal from the channel before the fader.

the 2442 FX has 8 XRL ins every single one with a preamp AND a direct out. Perfect to match the 1010. And you may find it for a very good price, not to mention that you will not be taking only that but a full mid size mixer.

I think I sounded like a salesman in this one. :)

im looking at 2442fxpro, looks like a good bet - cheaper than most 8-channel preamps ive seen, lots of extras tht i can use if i want and i.e. effects etc, also always me to expand should i choose to use out board processors in conjuction with my computer set up, switch to adats or wateva... only thing ill ask is does anyone know if the phantom power swtiches are one per channel or one per entire desk? theoretically it should be one per channel on a mixer of this size, but u can never be sure and i havent seen ne where tht says for a fact "+48V phantom power ON EACH CHANNEL" so can somewhere clear tht up for me? apart form tht the 2442 seems excellent

That's the way it usually is, yes, and such is the case with the 2442.

Sending power to mics that do not require it isn't a problem for them, in case that is what you were wooried about.

yes that is what i was worried about, ive been told by many ppl (including my music technology teachers) tht phantom power on mics tht arnt powered can result in damaged mics or possibly electric shocks from touching them

Well, I sure as hell won't say you "can't" cuz with electricity anything is possible, but I can say I have never seen a mic shock anyone unless they were standing in a puddle, were in a staticy room, or something of that nature...

Dynamic mics are supposed to be built that the power doesn't affect them. It states such in my yamaha mixer board manual. I've been running them that way for awhile, with no ill effects.

Many others have as well. No worries.

As long as you're running balanced lines the phantom power will run to the ground me thinks....

not the brightest spark...
