Hello again!

Now, I'd love monitor, soundcard advice and mixer advice. I want to be able to record a 5 miced drum kit with each mic on a different track. I have heard good things about the delta 44 with a behringer ub1602. will i need five seperate outs on the mixer and 5 ins on the card or can i mix the cymbals in stereo to a single track thus letting me go with the delta 44 with four inputs. i'm on a budget.

cheers.

The Delta 44 is a good choice, but I can't tell you about it matching with a 1602, (perhaps 1642?). A lot of the UB mixers have 4 pre-amps, so you'd need something for the 5th mic... Either that, or just use 4 mics? (Kick, snare, & 2-overheads, which would work fine.) You can't get 5 separate ins on the 44, which only has 4. The 66 has 4 analog and 2 digital, so if you found yourself a pre-amp with S/PDIF out, that'd give you 6 ins... or an EMU 1616M has 2 pre-amps on it, and the 1202 mixer has 4, which gives you 6..., but for more money... Probably, the 1st thing to do is figure how much money you want to spend total, how much you have to start with, and if there is an upgrade "path" you could choose to lessen the financial crunch...

for a 4 input card, the Behringer UB2442 service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear would likely be the wisest choice, it has 4 subgroup outputs, many preamps and 8 channels with direct outs as well (as I recall)...perfect for a 4 input sound card set up...

Sorry man. I dont follow.would the sub group outputs help me record five seperate live inputs into the delta 44? i'm a bit out of my depth here! The ub2442 is a bit pricey for me. I was thinking either the 1204fx, 1622fx or the 1832fx depending on what I can get away with. Can I get four seperate outputs from the 1204fx? Bearing in my mind I want something I'll grow into, should I go for the next one up?

I don't really want to spend the £150 on the 1832 unlesss I need it. What do subgroups do anyway?

All advice is so much appreciated. I just want to get recording.

Many thanks

the subgroups would help you do the mixed groups (like stereo cymbal mics or whatever you mentioned), anything in four mono channels or up to 2 stereo pairs...then, anything you need all by itself you would just use a direct output for...

subgroups are just a way to mix multiple channels into a single (or dual in the case of stereo) output.

For example, if you have 4 mics on drums, but just want to record a stero mix of them, mix them, pan them and send them out subgroups 1/2...if you have 3 mics on the guitar, mix them and send them out subgroup 3 into the card.

beautiful, a mixer like that would work perfectly in many situations for many years to come.

'Nother thing, you don't "need" the FX on the FX mixers, and you may not like them at all (most are "cheese", with little or no control over them)... Most folks record "dry" with little to no effects at all, and add them in during the mix-down process, where you're better able to control the amounts and types of effects. If you get the 44, it used to have a pretty good software bundle, so take the included bundles into consideration when making an interface choice, also (along with Total analog inputs, digital I/O, ADAT, bit depth, recording/playback frequency, cost, etc.). I may sound nuts, but for me, half the fun of shopping for an interface was the "hunt"...

I've been running my delta with a behringer mixer and it seems to work out great. I have a Behringer SL2442FX Pro (16 mono, 4 stereo) and a delta1010. I bought a delta1010LT card and a 8 channel TS(1/4")->RCA and I'm using the insert channels as direct outs (didn't think it would sound as good as it does). This allows you to have more preamps than you really need and the room to expand without buying a new card and a new mixer. I made the mistake of buying a small mixer and an extra soundcard before, but if you're doing drums, you want atleast 6 channels, I run 8 and I still want more.

And that's why I got an 1820M, which has ADAT, and S/PDIF (with the 8 analogs, that adds up to 18, if my edumification-type math ain't gone South). 'Course, ya gotta have more gear in order to use the digital ins... that means the need for more money... which means I gotta go tuh woik!

Andy has the idea, though, "flexibility"...

Tip: choose a software you like before choosing a hardware you like. Play around with a few first. The reasoning behind this is that, different software supports different hardwares driver's. I had an E-MU1820 and couldn't use it because 1) it drove me nuts trying to figure out patchmix, and 2) It only is supported (with multi-channels) with ASIO, which my favorite progra, Adobe Audition, does not support. I ended up goin WDM with the delta.

download demos of some software along the lines of: adobe audition :), some people like cubase, nuendo, sonar, sony vegas (actually liked that a little), etc. I'm sure everyone else can name about 500 other programs, but these are some i've worked with.

Hello All.

Thanks for the advice. I've been messing around with the old audition, cool edit pro 2.1 and like that alot. I'm mostly doing live organic instruments with a few samples thrown in. I hear Its tough to use plug ins with but I'll deal with that when I come to it. Have gone with the Delta 44 and the Behringer UB2442 FX (only £159.99)from DV24. they priced matched Turnkey.

Its great that your all so willing to help. I'd still be hurling obscenities my tascam 414 portastudio if it wasn't for you lot.

cheers
