Hurricane Victims Need Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hurricane Katrina has devistated a large portion of the southern United States, millions without power, death toll is still unknown, many cities are just, well, gone...reports of sharks swimming in what used to be city streets...

It's a terrible devistation, emergency response teams from all over the country are down there as well as the National Guard. People are looting stores and each other. It's terrible.

If you can donate money to the relief effort, please, go to www.redcross.org/ or any of dozens of other relief efforts, learn more at www.reliefweb.int/rw/dbc....44-USA&rc=2

Be sure to know who you are donating too, sadly, many scammers come out during these times.

Contrary to popular belief, America and Americans do not have infinately deep pockets, as we spend much money and energy helping other countries in need, the time has come, the US needs help.

Well, this is something...as I heard it, the NFL is giving $1 million to hurricane relief, the NY Yankees are giving $1 million...and Shaquille O'Neil HIMSELF is giving $1 million, plus he is down IN New Orleans helping relocate people...Shaq is always there when things happen, one of the most generous people in sports.

Then, on the flipside, you get scumbags like Eva Longoria (from the TV show "Desperate Housewives) that is speaking at the MTV VMA Awards show saying "I won't let some little hurricane stop me from wearing my swimsuit" WTF IS THAT!...I friggin HATE hollywood scum.

Hey, and where the hell is Bono crying for human compassion now? Friggin tax dodging, hypocritical scumbag.

yea man and i know certain people in "high places" not even care about them....as if its another country....altho i am not american i can see this.......and those same people that are not helping are then harsh on them for looting, talking bout taking ruthless actions against them WTF....i am not backing looting but when the baby has no diapers and food and all those help agencies can't reach the people efficiently, they turn to other means....but i strongly condemn the others that take advantage on this tragic situation to commit their evilious crimes......

I think for posterity we will come out of this event very different. and with a lot of lessons learned.

Though it will in the short term (couple years) affect the US global trade, the energy infrastructure is getting a swift kick in the butt to get going. Just this week there are two ethanol refineries being approved in ohio costing $50mil each which will probably put E85 at every station in the midwest.

I don't think disaster response will be the same either. A single Reserve MP Internment/Resettlement Battalion is expected to handle 15,000 people but in practice have been able to handle 200,000 people... unfortunatly I don't think there are _ANY_ Army National Guard I/R Battalions so all MP units heading south are Escort/Guard Battalions... which is great for moving people but they arn't designed, equipped, or regularly trained to manage refugee camps. It's my understanding the Federal troops can only be used for 10 days as part of diasater relief... I think at the very least there will be a big realignment of NG MP units into I/R Battalions with probably a crapload of Escort/Guard Companies... or something new that implements an I/R mission.

I will say this, I am sure you, zek, know much more than me about the process of organizing and deploying troops and such, but, it would seem to me that this would have went smoother if we HAD more troops here at home to deploy. Too many are all over the world, many in Iraq half-fighting a war that is being slowed and messed up for political reasons. I see, for my distant vantage point, that there is no reason that our military could not take care of these insugents and other hassles in Iraq if they were allowed to do so. There HAS to be something else going on.

Get that over with, bring our people back here to help our own...isn't that what they are for?

i have been wondering whether lake pontchartrain could have been drained years ago. anyone know about that? because i saw a tv show on the science channel about 'what would happen to new orleans if it got hit by a cat 5 hurricane' a few years ago, and the show said 'the lake would empty its waters into the city, which would be completely destrooyed.'

i just wonder why, if that was known, that lake wasnt filled in, eliminated. drained, dammed, pumped, and filled in, long ago. maybe it was not possible for some reason?

Honestly if we had all the troops back home it wouldn't make any difference... of the 1.3million active another million Reserve and I think .5million NG in service there are about .5million overseas leaving the other 2 million here at home.

The problem is an organization structure problem... it is illegal to utilize federal troops on US soil... law allows for 10 days of service in disaster relief... so do we want it now in rescue or two weeks from now in recovery. The National Guard and Coast Guard is whats mostly utilized and after looking it appears the there are no NG I/R units... probably because a state never really thinks it needs to set up a giant POW/Civilian Internment camp and that civil authorities can handle that...

Now we have an eceptional case where there are probably 150,000 unevacuated refugees and a million evacuated refugees and basically it boils down to a localized Malthusian Catastrophe (sudden collapse of civilization) and civil authorities don't have the resources and the legal military authority doesn't have the organization in place.

What an awful lot of people forget/don't know is that the Active, Reserve, and NG components are generally split as Combat, Combat Service Support, and Combat Support... what is needed is organizations that pretty much only exist in federal Reserve units and to not trample on a lot of long standing american military concepts and federal law because when the military does sets up thes camps they're sometimes called concentration camps... we are basically taking NG Infantry (Combat) and sticking them in a Combat Service Support role (and we _know_ that the armed forces are not that flexable...) you just don't want Infantry to interact with a civilian population because the training is not conducive to public relations finess.

The only organizations that have hands on experience in this scale of refugee operations (back in Desert Storm) are Reserve MP I/R Battalions... The Red Cross and FEMA have never done this before.

some people would say screw the law, people are dieing, get the federal troops in there. well... a similar thing is called The Patriot Act and we know how well loved that is. When does the military authority end and the civil authority begin? If it stays under civil authority (ias it is "supposed to") then we don't open a huge can of worms with martial law which I think was last used in the Civil War.

Good find xtc. It sounds like this type of disaster was inevitable. That article seemed to think that there would be sufficient warning to prepare for such a storm, but lots of people ignored the warnings, and even more did not have the resources to get out of Dodge even if they wanted to.

These types of things always bring out the best and the worst in people...it's up to each person to decide which it will be for them...

I donated to the red cross. Not as much as I would have liked to, but sadly money is tight right now.
