drum problem solved :) at last

that's it. i had a chance to play with best service's 'artist drums' recently and have discovered the joy of pure midi-input drums.

wow. WOW.

this product is great, and i am now looking at both it and fxpansion's BFD (big f'in drums) as my next purchase. its been a long time since i've updated anything because ive been saving up for a drum solution. this has got to be it.

i didnt know it was so easy. no more filling in things with a mouse. just hammer away on the keys and then quantize it. picture perfect. realistic, multilayered beats in an instant. anything you want! now i can throw in a tom at a weird time. these things are multisample instruments, too, so if you play softly you trigger a real, recorded weak hit and if you play hard, you get a completely different sound sample.

i cant believe the realism. if nothing else, its gotta be a great composition tool. first thing i tried turned into a potential song thats a bit different (because it sounds more human and real, even when quantized) than what i've done in the past.

time to say bye to fruity. soon, soon.

forty

i normally take 5-6 hrs for fruity programming of only one song... when you tried the BFD (is this the one www.fxpansion.com/product-bfd-main.php ?) , how long you think it will cut down the hassle time..?

i've used fruity since v2, reason 3.0 still pretty much the same.. maybe BFD would be a great enhancement to consider.

i didnt use bfd, i used artist drums. bfd is probably better, from what i understand and thats the one i think i want. but they work the same way.

it takes you out of your head. i wrote a beat in 2 seconds and quantized it and it was just there, bam. it sounded both human and precise.

i think it must shave off a lot of time. and its more fun. you could input your basic verse and chorus beats in literally the length of the time it takes to play the actual song, then quantize those. then you can go back and erase the sections where you want fills, and program those in the same way, taking your time to try out different fills.

Hmmm, I'm very interested in this. Programming drum tracks is the #1 bane to my motivation. I hate starting on new songs because I don't want to sit and program drums. This could be a great asset to me.

What is the price tag like for these?

Would you say it's easier to sequence the drums with your mouse than to sit there and try to get a perfect midi track playing the drums on a keyboard though?

well, for the type of music i'm playing, fruity/reason drum sampling is TOO perfect to be true... i'm definitely not thinking about getting my snare or kick sounding perferct all the way through the songs..

yea we can adjust the volume of each snare hit but may take way too much time getting things sounding more human... and yet still the results are questionable to a pro's hearing...

agree with tadpui.. really got tired after a few years sitting and hitting each drum pattern for rock / metal song songs... i might be off doing something better than that lol....

if what forty said is true, it's gonna worth a try..

cheers guys.

Damn, nearly $350. That's still in the entry-level price range for a real drum set. I'm sorry but I just can't bring myself to pay that for a single piece of software. Hell even a full install of Win XP costs less than that.

I need one that's priced like Fruity but offers live-input. Fruity kind of has that but it never worked very well for me...too much lag between the keystroke and it registering in the pattern.

What I really need is for my drummer friend to move closer to me :)

Native Instruments Battery is $199, still expensive, but less-so. Cakewalk Project5 is $299, more, but ya get tons of stuff with it, not only drums, synths and all sorts of stuff, and Porject5 now records audio too, so realistically it could likely be your tracking app as well...

The prices quoted are what I saw at Musicians Friend just now...so they are subject to change.
