I'm working on my first CD for children. It will be primarily a voiceover with background music.
I'm working on the script right now and then I plan to purchase recording software and a good microphone.
Can anyone make any recommendations? Any tips? What else will I need? Can you point me to articles on this site or elsewhere?
Thanks!

Aug 07, 2005 02:10 pm Well, I guess this would be much like any other recording from a technical standpoint. Is the music original composition that you need to record and mix, or what?
What kind of a computer do you have right now? What is you budget for the software?

Aug 07, 2005 02:25 pm Thanks. I hope to find a lot of excellent information here.
At first I'm planning to purchase canned background music. I'll need three separate musical varieties as I plan to have three separate segments on a finished CD of about one (1) hour in length. So I'll need about fourteen (14) minutes of music per segment (which can be made up of repeated musical snippets each).
I have ample computing resources: two desktop PCs and a desktop-replacement notebook, all networked on Windows XP. It's my habit to purchase a beginner's software package in any new software category so I can learn it thoroughly and move up if I need to.
What can you tell me about the MXL offering here: www.mxlmics.com/mic_kits/mickit_index.html ?
Aug 07, 2005 03:50 pm Well, there is a decent beginner /intermediate software FOR FREE at www.kreatives.org/kristal/ another low-priced, but very powerful option is www.multitrackstudio.com/ either of these would do the tasks you are needing.
I don't use MXL myself, but lots of people do and like them very much.

Thanks for the KRISTAL tip!
Aug 08, 2005 12:37 pm you're gonna need a good mic preamp and sound card....m-audio has some good stuff, and i'd get as nice of a preamp and mic as ya can afford. Presonus and Samson have some nice 'affordable' ones.
welcome to hrc!

Aug 08, 2005 12:41 pm I dunno, for a simple task like they need, single backing track with a single voiceover, much lighter-duty hardware may suffice. Hard to be sure without trying. The preamp, yeah, probably, but a high-end sound card my not be needed.
Aug 08, 2005 12:50 pm i'd say a good two channel I/O for under $200 (USD) surely, YOU wouldn't suggest a stock soundcard, would ya? i think if mordie is gonna be selling his product, he's gonna need atleast a higher end Sound Blaster.
