Can't Do It To Me This Time

Hey all,

I'm working on this song (located in my profile) and I could use a little help. This is fairly dark song. I have the lyrics which I will be tracking this weekend and next.

There are a couple of vocal effects that I'm trying to achieve and I can't seem to get it right. This is a story about a woman that is killed and later comes back to haunt/torment her killer. The killer takes his own life cause he can't handle the voices in his head. She then realizes that everyone looses.

I'm trying to figure out how to make my voice sound as if it is coming from a TV set in the background. The intro is going to have various news anchors reporting the murder. A similar effect is used at the very beginning of Wish You Were Here. Actually PF used these types of effect quite a bit.

The second effect I'm trying to do is create a voice from beyond type of thing. This would be a womans voice. Possibly whispering or something.

Anyways, if any of you guys have any ideas on how I can accomplish these effects (or any other suggestions for that matter) I would appreciate it.

Thanks
BTW - the mix still needs some attention since I'm still learning all this stuff but it is getting better.... I think

Thanks LG. I have been messing with the EQ as I read somewhere in the forums that is how to achieve this effect. I have a feeling I just hadn't been eq'ing it enough.

Id suggest you also need some verb in there to give it dimension...how much depends on how far away you want your voice to be...

EQ'in high freqs and cutting lows will give ye a lofi, sharpish sounding vocal, when reverbed, may be what ye want but am nae xpert and may be wayyyy of the mark.

Cheers and good luck mate

I'd try sharply rolling off below 250HZ & above ~6kHZ, and then play with the frequency's in between.

www.kvraudio.com/get/777.html

Hit the radio setting on this bad boy, and turn the volume down in the mix.

Then mix in some backround samples white noise, and a really high pitch sqeal (you know, like the ones the TV gives off when its on mute?) really low......

hahaha

I understand this sounds terribly old-fasioned, but have you ever considered videotaping someone doing the vocals, then playing it back and just throwing a microphone on the TV?

Why am I picturing a really crappy 13 inch black and white TV whith that horrid speaker in the side of it?

Any-ho, that's what I'd try.

Cheers!

Jeff, that's a great idea. I've got an old crappy tv that would probably work great for this. I was also thinking of just turning the tv on during the news and flipping through the channels and recording that, but I thought I would probably be violating copywrite.

Anyways, thanks everyone for you help.

CS, I'm going to check out that plug-in site later tonight. Looks great what I've seen so far (not just for this project)

Dude, I did that exact thing for a song once...I recorded many different drug-related stories as an intro for one of my tunes. I recorded the news casts and some static of a channel with no signal, put them into the PC and edited them all together with a little "click" sound between each like a channel change...the last changed to static...it turned out VERY cool...

Oh ya! Some static.... that's what has been missing! so far everything I've done has sounded fake. Static should give it a more authentic feel. I was thinking that I would pan each channel change differently to give it sort of a chaos kinda feel. Now the "wheels" are turning.

Thanks guys!
