Guitar body?

Ok, so I have began laying out the plans for the guitar I wanna build...

Now I figured to shortcut the body by just buying one from Warmoth...a mahogany Explorer...

Id like to lay out the routing locations and such on my AutoCAD program but I have no engineering dimensions of the body perimeter. Is there anyone out there who might know where I could find this...I know its not a common piece of info such as EQ frequencies...but I figure I would try.

The basis of this question is purely the need to draw highly detailed plans,...maybe even renderings of this thing...the more detailed I get the nicer it should turn out...

I'd call Warmoth and see if they can supply you with the info you need. Maybe they can send you the specs they use to cut the body. Also it looks like the pickup routings will differ based on the configuration you select. I don't see any specifics about the pickup and control routings, but I'd bet that they can supply you with that info also.

Ill do that and report back...

Hopefully they are cool enough...

And maybe they might operate on a compatible CAD system...

Wow, xct...really? Cool stuff...

[email protected]
And I am on Arch. Desktop/Acad 2004

Anyhow so I emailed Warmoth and the owner emailed me back. He was kind of pissy in his email as if I should have known what the answer was already...All I asked for was a basic outline of the body...And he made it seem like I just asked him for the code to his company safe. He even used the analogy that it would be like a software manuf. giving out their source code which I thought was a bad analogy. I don't think the explorer body style is as big of a secret as a code for a piece of software, being lots of companies make an explorer.

It wasn't all bad...I just think he is irritated by the number of emails he gets like that. So I figured **** it, Ill just order the body and be done with it. Engineer it myself...

Warmoth can pretty do any routing you like. My jazz bass had a custom Warmoth body (in Walnut). They were good about leaving some holes undrilled for me.

They're probably just looking to preserve their market without someone taking their dimensions. I'm not sure that their stuff is exactly the same dimensions as the "originals" - possibly for copyright reasons. They are just protecting their interests. If you have some "special" features you want on your Explorer, they might just drill the body for you (possibly a little more dough). This will save you time in the long run.

How are you going to finish the guitar?

Its too bad he had to be an *** about it though...I mean, the dimensions of just about everything I've ever bought through a catalog have been there in print...its not like I can reverse engineer stuff just by knowing its dimensions. Jeez.

"Oh crap, we'd better not even sell our guitars, because once somebody takes a tape measure to it, the secret's out!"

Pffft.

Yeah, Tadpui...that was my thinking...The outside perimeter is no secret...point in case the Gibson/ESP lawsuit...So to a schmuck like me I think "Big Deal!"

I would like to try to do my own version of one similar to the Ken Lawrence ax Hetfield has...That thing is pretty elaborate. But it looks really nice. I plan on just staining the whole thing and creating my own headstock design. So we will see where it goes.

I figure if I start designing now...the guitar will be close to 'done' by next spring...I just recall Noize strongly stating the word patience when wanting to build one...So I am setting my sights on not being done till spring...

I would love to build my own guitar from scratch. I just finished a custom paint job on one of my old guitars and the most difficult part was waiting for the clear coat to cure for 6 weeks! So ya, patience is pretty important. Here's a link to a photo if anyone want to check it out.

I have painted the pickups to match since I took this photo.

I refinished a bass guitar years ago, I purposely added layers of clear coat too quickly, before it was done drying, so later (weeks later) when everything did dry, the clear coat had a ton of cracks in it. I then took neon pink paint (over and otherwise black, gray and while paint design) and smeared over it with the pink only filling in the cracks...it ended up looking super cool. I still have it...

What a cool idea. Did you end up putting more clear on after the pink?

it was always my goal to, to bring it back to a nice, smooth, flat surface, but I never have. I have been thinking lately about finally doing that 15 years later...

Jeepers...15 years Deebs??? I was 10 years old then...

Suppose I have that coming...I stripped, sanded and primed a beat up strat. All the hardware and wiring in bags and its all sitting in a gig bag I have...That'll probably be the case for me too...15 years later I will get back to it...

hehehe. Well, 15 years ago I was 22...in the height of my self-destructive behavior.
