hey everyone! now i know this question will probably get answered with "it's a matter of taste" but i am just looking for a few pointers....
i have been reading up on mastering, and i am looking at what software i have available to me to get into the mastering process with my next few projects.
on my music pc i have
Cubase SE
Wavelab Lite
Steinberg Master Unit
so...... i was thinking, i'd do my tracking and mixing in cubase se, export to a stereo wav file and do mastering in wavelab lite, then burn to a cd with the master unit? but then the master unit also has master effects! ahhh! maybe i should forget the master unit and stick with wavelab lite for all mastering and burning purposes. but then the master unit looks like it's great for compling a cd on....
any opinions? thanks as always :)
i have learnt so much from the use of this forum, any advice at all is gratefully accepted!

Jun 01, 2005 01:15 pm what i normally do is almost the same as your idea..
tracking & mixing in Sonar 24bits/48kBps; export to stereo *.wav; open back in Wavelab for compression; then export as *.wav; open Harbal for EQing; save as *.wav; open back in wavlab; maximize everything, then save as 24bit *wav;.. Later before burning onto cd, convert the final file again to 16 bit also using wavelab... simple..

Jun 01, 2005 01:31 pm does burning onto a cd automatically convert 48kbps audio to 44.1? or is best to do this maunally with software...
i've been recording at 16bit 44.1 so far but will be trying 24bit from now on - just wondering whether to use 44.1 still or increase that too?

Jun 01, 2005 01:38 pm what i've learnt through experience; wavelab has a special plugin (UV22HR) that converts bit to bit with the lowest loss in quality through dithering...
Stop recording at 16bit if you can cater 24bit! ... Track everything in 24bit, 48kbps will be sufficient... 44 so-so.. 96 even better but higher latency, bigger file etc and normally used in 5.1 mixing; 48 is just nice... Use 16bit/44.1kbps only before burning onto cd... thats it !
maybe others have different perspective..

Jun 01, 2005 02:20 pm what aspects of the studio do you have to check for 24 bit compatibility? ill be running from a source through a desk into a delta 66, into cubase SE... should each of these components state 24bit compatibility?
