May 25, 2005 07:12 pm Hey Bleak, ya, you guys got the Shiraz alright. My fav as well. We have a few available here in Canada. Wynns ($20.99 CDN), Black Opal ($16.99),
Moculta Barossa Valley ($21.99) and Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Dry ($34.99). As you can see a good Shiraz is not cheap here so I have to settle for next best;
Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery - (mmmm, Ice Wine!)
Gray Monk Estate Winery - (awesome Pinot Noir)
and one other fav is Hester Creek Estate Winery (Pinot Noir).
All of these wines are from the Okanagan in beautiful British Columbia so I doubt that any of you have heard of them or tasted them before but if you do get a chance, give a BC wine a chance.
May 25, 2005 07:23 pm i have troubble differentiating between Shiraz, and Merlot...

May 25, 2005 07:28 pm I can tell the difference but I don't stand a hope in hell at describing it to you. I would say however that a Merlot is a fuller tasting wine. If you had them side by side you would want to taste the Shiraz first. But I'm no connoisseur, look at my name for my true religion LOL
hahaha, Tadpui

May 25, 2005 07:30 pm Sorry Bleak, I have that Monty Python skit about Australian Wines in my head now ("...that's a hand-to-hand fighting wine...").
Even though I'm a transplanted pommie, I'm going to have to shout out for the California wines. The central coast produces amazing wines. From Paso Robles, all the way down to Santa Ynez. Above that you have the Napa Valley, which produces fabulous wines too (and some rubbish...).
Best way to find out about wines is to go try some. Find a local wine tasing evening (look for restaurants that do it), or just go buy some. You'll work out in a hurry what to avoid.
If you like the reds, like Merlots, try Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, or a zinfandel (I avoid white zins...they can be nasty), shiraz is also nice. Other blends are cool too. There's a grape called Cabernet Franc that's used as a blend wine. Occasionally you'll see a bottle of just that, which is always worth a look.
Go have some fun. If you're buying a bottle and it has a screw top, it's in a box, or it's under $4 a bottle, put it back. Other than that, explore.
I'm not into whites myself(other than champagne). Baron Rothschild (his is the Chateau La Tour of legend) was once asked if he ever drank white wine. "Of course," he replied. "When I run out of red."

May 25, 2005 07:35 pm Around here we have an awesome event to celebrate the new vintages.
They have this thing where you hop on a bus and tour all (most) of the vinyards. Top chefs from the local hotels serve up appy's etc. as well. Great way to try several different wines and top notch food.
May 26, 2005 03:24 am Bumwine is pretty cool. I have a wine website that I have neglected for some time, but ther eis some good information there. I hoked up with a wine god from Belgim and he helped allot. Would love to bring the site back to life, but this damn music thing has gotten in the way ;-)

Shiraz is the heavier of the two, both are fairly fruity, but the merlot is a way lighter wine, the shiraz will have a sharper taste, and is fuller bodied.
Bizarrely i took lots of wine exams about eight years ago. I like a nice shiraz cab myself, maybe something heavier with a veggie roast in the winter.

May 26, 2005 11:42 am Tallchap, or may i call you Bruce?
your not talking about the wine that's best to sit down and avoid?
iiiiiiiiiiiiimmanuel Kant was a real pissant

Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar
Who could think you under the table.
So on and so forth ...... :)
May 26, 2005 12:03 pm yeah there's accually a vinyard about 45 mins from me...they do tours, tasting and whatnot...i stick to roughly $10 bottles +/- $3...... what turned me on was some shrimp alfredo with white wine....absoulutely amazing. i'm a beer person myself, but wine's definately got it's time and place.

Are you serious?? Man, I gotta stick to beer. I personally find Merlot to be the heavier of the two. Oh well.

May 26, 2005 12:22 pm Shiraz would, typically, be of a heavier viscosity. But it really depends on the quality of the wine!
Hell, I’ve had Chablis' heavier than some dodgy brothers Shiraz.
And I’ve partaken in some fairly ordinary wine before :)

May 26, 2005 01:31 pm My word, it's getting cultured around here. One minute it's all "Which condenser mic should I buy?", and the next it's, "Try the Cabernet, darling, it's fabulous!" Methinks a spin-off, dB-Wan: Home Recording and Wine Appreciation COnnection....maybe not.
Mixing Forum: "Newbie here. I have a Delta44, and I'm not sure whether I should drink the Shiraz or the Pinot when recording Drums."
Bleak: I think you're mixing up two separate sketches. One is Philosophy department of the university of Wallamaloo ("we'd like to welcome the pommie bastard to god's own earth..."), the other is "A lot of people poo-poo Australian wines.." (Yes, this is one to set down and avoid...it has a bouquet like an Aborigine's armpit..).
Philthyone: Where's tat website? I'm going to guess you cover all the local wineries. Yum.
Just had another great bottle of Robert Hall 2002 Merlot(Paso Robles). Fantastic. Also, have you tried Linne Colodo "Problem Child"? It's a blend, and it's sublime. Treana, and Justin are two of my favourites (Justin's Isoscoles is a treat).

May 26, 2005 04:23 pm Without appearing rude to our wonderful host, I'm very surprised that dB-Wan hasn't yet chimed in with a recommendation for using Har-Bal.
Is the Cabernet good?
dB-Wan: It's better with Har-Bal.
