Clean Electric Guitar Question

I f I were wanting to record a song in SONAR 3 P.E. that has a distorted guitar rhythm track and a clean electric guitar rhythm track, what would be the best way to go about recording those tracks so that I get some good separation and definition on the guitars?
I usually double track the distoted guitar tracks in most of my songs, but I'm not sure what is the best way to to record clean and distorted tracks for the same song.

record the clean on totally seperate tracks and passes through the song....this allows for better mixing options later down the road...

in my profile, you can hear me dooin' that, we did all the verses (clean) in one pass
then went back and overdubbed the distortion parts.....you'll be listening to a total of 10 guitar tracks, but we didn't play anything twice, just used different mics and what not.

Cool . . . but is there a good rule of thumb as far as panning is concerned with this type of tracking?

yeah, my rule of thumb is put 'em where you want 'em. I just never, or very rarely pan anything hard either way...just enough to notice placement or give space to the sound.

no real rule just a bit of planning (aka pre-production)....

like if you're the only guitarist, i'd play every distortion part twice through...on as many tracks as i could (again for more options down the road).... on "Police State" we have two seperate guitarists so i keep them on their own sides...NOT HARD PANNED LEFT AND RIGHT, bit you can hear them commin' outta each speaker.

for that sound i had each guitar player's SM57 panned hard left and right, then i had a LDC on each that was panned 50% L&R, plus i've got direct signals panned (very quietly) dead center.

that's how i did my first attempt for a "wall of sound"....but if you plan on dooin' wide drums or other things that will be panned hard L&R ya gotta leave room for them.

oh the cleans i did, were the opposite, i had the condensor's panned 75% L&R the 57's were 30%L&R direct was center, and the reverb was hard L&R....gave it a more 'open sound'

I personally normally double track my guitars (distorted) and pan em about 50-75% each way. I find that 2 guitars panned, with bass doon the middle is pleanty strong!!!!!

Gid luck
