Though the bastards wishing for a white cristmas got us 1-2 inches of ice and 3 days to a week without power in my area we seem to be a bit warmer I think... though we are at about 200% normal rainfall for the month. Maybe I can clean the yard up from christmas damage in the next week or so...

WYD, you're nuts!

nuts!

as for the global warming thing, i remain skeptical of the greenhouse gas link, ever since i saw ice core data that would seem to suggest a link between cosmic rays, cloud cover, and the solar wind, the output of which may vary across centuries-long timescales. surely, the greenhouse effect is a real phenomenon, but there may be self-limiting processes at work, and overall, right now, the solar wind hypothesis makes more sense to me for a few different reasons. one reason is that it explains recorded, well-known climate changes in the past, including the maunder minimum, aka 'the little ice age' in the 1700s.

this hypothesis is never really talked about, for a few different reasons.

Forty

Are ye talking of global diming?? I heard of this, and its mad!! Means we'll all suffocate and have an ice age rather than burn to death!!

Mad it was...but seemed plausible!

P.S. The kids love the snow!!! NEver mind the folk goin to work trying NOT to break a leg!

snow sux in Raleigh, we got one inch on a wed afternoon back in mid january, and a normal 1 hour commute took 10+hours. a coworker left at 7pm and got home at 4am. what in the Hell is that all about. i think it made headline news, like one inch of snow cripples north carolinas capital. :)

news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/2333133.stm

here are some (unexamined) links.

shortly after i heard about this i started to think that there might be a big difference between a 'run away' greenhouse effect like what you have on venus, versus a greenhouse effect on earth, where you have trees and plants to remove excess co2 (as long as we dont cut too many down). i think there has even been evidence to the idea that increased co2 in the atmosphere means increased foliage on plants. that could be a limiting cycle right there: it may be really difficult for earth to experience anything like a runaway greenhouse effect.

im kind of keeping my eye on this to see how the cosmic ray hypothesis turns out--its more elegant, and it explains more. environmentalists might have to open thier minds to this if it seems to be possibly true, or else they will be accused of playing loose with the facts just to get things they want.

i dont know of any recent evidence disproving these ideas--it just hasnt been in the news that much, but i understand there's a a general controversy about it. excuse me...aboot it.

Snow sucks.
Never want to be in it again, thank you.

However, we in southern California have just gone through another tropical storm (about five so far). Tornados - yes, on the west coast, wind, and rain. And rain. And rain. And rain....

Los Angeles has had nearly 34" this season (seasonal average is about 10"), and we're close to that. Floods, mudslides, rock-falls, car accidents, river erosion, rain, rain, rain. Nasty.

Oh, look. It's raining now.

If I wanted to live in the rain, I'd move to Ireland (or back to Wandsworth)!

Hey Forty

Just read some of those articles, specially the BBC one.

Aye, it has credence and definite possibility, tho it does say our use of CFC's etc does the clouds no favours!

Still, what can ye dae if the clouds are against ye!! Gives a whole new meaning to "clouds havin a silver lining!"....bloody clouds!

Still...there is nowt we can do to change clouds...maybe we can nuke the clouds :-p !!

Coco.
