MBox and ProTools question

i am thinking about purchasing the MBox, but it comes with ProTools LE instead of the full version of ProTools... what are the differences between the software and is it a reason to not get the MBox?

Thanks!

I am not sure, but I think LE limits to 32 tracks and it may not allow you to use the PT plugins except for the ones bundled along with it.

I would go that route myself. It'll work great on it's own, but when it comes time to upgrade, they got ya by the balls...

That said, I am not a ProTools fan, some here are an like it a lot, so you'll get both opinions.

i had a 002 runnin' LE and for the kinda stuff you/we are/were dooin' it worked great....the HD systems are basically for power users and pro's.
it's a good program and the environment is a bit different than say cubase or sonar.

I'm back bitches!!!

From what I have heard in my research of TDM, you can transfer projects between systems (TDM & LE) and it just disables the plugins you don't have from system to system. LE is in fact limited to 32 tracks but I could never see a reason why I would need more. Unless I was scoring a movie or something. I would go to the digidesign website (in fact I have many times) and research it. Its really informative and you can download all the manuals for the gear and software.

I personally like my Tascam FW-1884 with Cubase. I get the same results as my one freind running Protools LE with a DIGI-002 and without the restrictions.

yeah, me too, after i got a 002 and learned my way around a bit, i realized i was perfectly content with Sonar, so i got a different interface and came back. and the 1884 is what i wanted to replace it with, but ended up settling on a q-10 which was more than half the price.

Without going into too much detail the main differences are that LE systems are Host-based, meaning they rely on a computer's CPU for all processing, and the TDM sytems use DSP chips onboard their cards for processing (read as "more $$$$"). There are other perks/tools that the TDM systems have exclusively but I could go on and on.

If you are interested in Pro Tools, I'd recommend the Mbox for hobby users, but for about the same price or less you can get one of Digidesign's legacy products like Digi001 or the older AudioMedia III card (about $100 on ebay) that will allow you to run any version of Pro Tools up to 6.4 (6.7 is most current). The Digi001 offers 18 inputs/output and the AMIII has 2 in/out (i think). It's a much cheaper option for the home recordist.

hope this helps
