Hey guys,
I have been looking into purchasing a keyboard that specifically focuses on the quality of grand piano. Obviously I mean a keyboard that can mimmick the grand piano sound, not actually sound as good quality.
I already have a Microkorg, but that's a synth. It's not doing the job in the Piano department.
can you suggest any keyboards that are cheap with this quality?
thanks

Jan 26, 2005 01:15 pm Most of the Yamaha consumer boards have great Grand Piano sounds. Just make sure you get one that is capable of Midi. Usualy they do it with a USB cable on the low end models. I have one that works just fine. Can't remember the model at the moment. (At work)
Jan 26, 2005 01:17 pm You could just get any old controller, or use your microkorg, hook it up as a softsynth in your PC (assuming your doing the PC route) and get a set of Grand Piano samples to use. There are many some cheap, some expensive, and I am sure there are free ones out there somewhere...
Jan 26, 2005 01:20 pm Yeah I posted a great one just a few days ago
I'll dig it up

These are some great sounds
If you want, I can try to get the sample file i got back up again

Jan 26, 2005 01:45 pm Thanks for the links
can i use these samples in Cubase SX?
If so, how do you use the sample on the program or upload it to my microkorg?
Jan 26, 2005 01:55 pm there's some info on that site how to download and install those files,
next you will need some sort of soundfont player.. capable of being hosted in Cubase, since I don't know anything about Cubase... I can't help you :S

Jan 26, 2005 02:04 pm SFZ is a freeware soundfont player. I installed it into n-track and it works OK. Not as smooth or easy to use as SF player in Fruity Loops, but still very workable. I believe SFZ got bought by cakewalk, so it may not be free for long (if it still is now).
I'd think that if it installed into n-track, it should install into other players.
I beleive that traction played soundfonts as well.

Jan 26, 2005 02:41 pm holy crap that's a large sound font. 72mb?
I'm not sure how you play soundfonts in Cubase, but you will need to set up your microkorg as your midi in device and you will need some sort of midi capable device in your computer (SBLives work great for this). You will also obviously need to hook up your microkorg via midi to your computer.

Jan 26, 2005 04:20 pm well, i will test out the sound samples either tonight or tomorrow.
I have an Audiophile 2496, so i have midi input into my PC.
Personally, I would rather have an actual keyboard with grand piano/piano capabilities. I used samples for too many years and dont like them because they're so restrictive.
I will give them a try anyway.
thanks everyone
Jan 26, 2005 04:23 pm You do, of course, realize that a keyboard with the built in sounds are samples as well, right? There is no real difference, both being digital reproductions of the sound...
The benefit of softsynth sampels is that you can have many sets and change at will...and they can be MUCH higher quality than your typical built in keyboard sounds, with the possible exception of the very expensive studio/professional synths that sell for hundreds/thousands of dollars.
Jan 26, 2005 04:27 pm Hey Im not sure if this excels in the GRand but it does have a great one (im no expert) but not only does it have your grand but a ton of other sounds that are extremly good and useful.I plam on getting one in the future..It's not 2 expensive either heres a link to see it in action
