What kind of dork sells himself off to be a reporter, but includes no information or facts relating to his article. He just says things and assumes people will listen and believe him.

A real reporter may have actually investigated the case at hand, maybe found some details to the story. Instead, he just runs his mouth, thinking he's the next journalistic Jesus.

He should be run out.

Dude, thats what most reporters do...hell, thats what finally force Dan Rather into retirement.

Thats why the media isn't realy the "News" as it's sells itself to be.

<Holland is a perfect example of what happens <when there is no governing moral standard. The <Dutch have decriminalized most drugs and people <smoke dope openly in venues set aside for the <practice. Prostitutes display their wares like <mannequins in department store windows.

and id be willing to bet that the murder/crime rate in Holland is way lower than any state in the U.S.A.

Hmmmm... Whether it's true or not, I don't think it's going to make a really big splash or anything. It's just a small opinion column, and Cal Thomas is only on at like 2:00 in the morning. He's not really one of the Network's "news reporters".

The column is pretty poorly written, and does lack any form of support. On the other hand, it does seem like kind of a strange thing to pull out of thin air if that's what he did.

Wouldn't that be because so many crimes have been decriminalized...?

Im not really sure? i guess my point was that i dont think legalizing weed/prostitution would make things worse.

that slippery slope argument also surfaced in a thread about nearly the same thing, over in the freesquid political forum.

ultimately, cal thomas is just a little seal of a man.

Cal Thomas is also part of the panel on "Fox News Watch" which is a show that critiques how well the media is doing its job (They don't shy away from discussing their own network, either). It's very interesting, and very honest. Maybe they should have a discussion about this article...

Well, I would say that at best it wouldn't make anything worse. More than likely it would. The point I was making is that if you take something off of the list of "crimes," then of course you're going to have a lower crime rate since those things are no longer considered criminal activity. You'll still end up with more people doing them. The number of people doing it certainly isn't going to go down if you legalize it. At best it would stay the same and nobody would get in trouble for it. So, if you consider those things bad, then, yes, things will get worse if those things are legalized.

I'm reluctant to give any credibility to this story without proper context. I personally think that the Netherlands is one of the loveliest countries I've had the pleasure to visit. Very clean place, full of very friendly people. I've even considered retiring there one day!

There's a few rough areas like the Zeedjik (sp?), but every country has them. On the whole, it's a fantastic country. The decriminalisation of drug use (not trafficking), has helped in stemming the spread of diseases such as HIV - with the needle exchange programs - and has been quite forward looking, in my humble opinion, in it's focussing the law on the criminals, and not the victims. I wonder if the reported who wrote this piece of crap column has even been there! He didn't seem to report on any of the positive aspects of the country, which are so obvious and self evident to anyone who has ever set foot in the country. This story seems to be bent toward the sensationalism, rather than credible reporting. Analagising the WW2 era Nazi occupation to the modern day is simply crass.

Where am I? What am I doing on this soapbox?

Yes, I was in the Netherlands briefly, and found the people there to be extremely friendly. Except when I was in Amsterdam and I was standing in the way of someones bike. I almost got hit like 5 times in two days. But I'm sure that's my bad, cuz I didn't know where to walk.

umm im talking more of like murder and violent crime, smoking weed even though its illegal i still dont consider a crime or something to even be concearned about. I think having weed illegal causes more crime, drug dealers killing each other for territory and what not. so my point was weed and buying sex dont lead to violent crime. :)

Gorp,

Been to Holland, great place as places go. Fox news exists as all others for ratings, bottom line. Here in Detroit we do things a little differently. The drug dealers have the money and pay the police. We had a shoot out of two gangs on the next street over with AK47's. Fox missed that one. Wonder why? So did all of the other media. Hmmmm.

I kinda think if folks want to mess themselves up they will find a way, law or no. My wife sees more almond eyed crack babies and fetal alchol babies every year in her class. One thing about the whole mess is there is a degree of "self instenction" involved which assists in combating the problem.
