Hey guys,

Just scored an old KLH Forty-One Dolby 2 channel reel to reel deck tonight for $3.00 flat. I tested everything and it appears to be in working order, just don't have any tape for it yet or any reels. I am messing with it for some experimentation that I am doing for analog based stuff at the moment.

Do you guys know where I might be able to score a couple rolls of tape or much about cleaning the heads on one of these systems? I have started searching the web and haven't found much so far except a biography of the creator and a couple of the same systems for cheap on ebay. lol If you guys have any opinions or suggestions I would appreciate it. Just thought this was a pretty sweet score for a blast from the past piece of gear like this. peace

Charlie

Nice find! I have a couple of reel to reel machines here too, I really like them. For tape you should check musicians friend and radio shack, they both used to carry it but I'm not sure if they do anymore or not. For cleaning the heads once again I believe both sources have cleaning solution. Just use that solution and cotton swabs. Remember to clean the rollers too. Also they sell a rubber conditioner for the rubber roller, its a good idea to pick some of that up while youre at it.

You'll want to get a degauser (sp) as well, to keep the heads, ah... de-gaused . Does it have those awesome needle-style VU meters ? Love those !

Nice! Clean the heads constantly! I clean not only the heads but the whole tape path. I do that before each session, if we take any breaks I clean them again, and then after each sesion. I degaus (demagnetize) after about 3 to 4 hours of play time.... again do not only the heads but the whole tape path. MAKE SURE THE MACHINE IS OFF WHEN DEMAGNETIZING... You can damage it if left on. Make sure you don't have any tapes laying around when you damagenetize as well. I take mine out of the room completely. I would stay away from all those rubber cleaners and rejuvinators. For the pinch roller you can use something like Dawn Dishwashing liquid and water. DO NOT USE ANY ALCOHOL BASED PRODUCTS ON THE PINCH ROLLER! (I made that mistake when I first started out)Musicians Freind does still carry tape. You are going to want to set the bias for whatever tape you get. It doens't hurt to have a manual. If you don't have one I found a guy who has a lot of that analog stuff. I'll have to dig for his email address... I think he has a website as well.

Welcome to the wonderful world of analog.
