good deal or bootleg ?

I was speaking with a buddy of mine who was telling me about all the new dvd's he had purchased. He bought 3 new ones this past weekend. He got those 3 for $15. I said, "Wow but are they new titles," he said, "yes." I said to him, "then that is a good deal." He told me that he buys 3 or 4 every weekend. Well, that isn't the strange part...

I went over to see his growing dvd collection; what supprised me was that he not only had knew titles but some were movies still in the theaters. Like...the new exorcist, the village and so on. I asked him how he can get movies that are yet unreleased. He told me he wasn't sure but he bought them from a vendor at a flea market. I asked him if the movies were good quality, he said, "Yep...dvd quality."

Now, I'm puzzled. How is it possible to get movies on dvd before they leave the theaters? Are these movies bootlegged, stolen from distributors or does that vendor have great connections?

Hey Bud

The same deal applies here in the UK.

Folks here must get the films you guys have out on DVD (Which are generally in the pics here at that time) so someone just copies the dvd you would buy from the shops (or that we would go and see in the cinema) and sells it on.

DVD writer costs about £60 and blank dvds can be bought £32 for 100!!!

Selling them on the markets here for £5-£10 a film...

Tho, the stuff you guys have in the flicks generally is released in the US first which is the puzzler! Maybes a digital video camera ported straight onto DVD - dunno....you get some real small DV cameras and with the right software ti could appear same as original dvd.

Who knows!

It might be an instudio swipe. I would expect that they immediatly start manufacturing these movies as they hit the theaters. Remember when there were bootleg eminem albums before he finished recording?

The fun part is a lot of films are coming into theaters with an antipiracy code built into a couple of frames (a bunch of pink dots) so they can determin which threater isn't doing a good job at security... plus ushers get a $500 reward for turning in people with cameras.

It could be that a projectionist built a telecine device with a good miniDV camera (XL1s or VX2000)...which is probably the most likely...

If the guy at the fleamarkert has better distributuion connections that blockbuster then somethings probably not legal. :)

To filmmakers DVD quality is like CD quality... DVD's are just uncompressed mpeg2's with mp3 audio... you just see them on a screen with 500 lines of resolution from 10 feet away...

Some good points guys. The thing is, the dvd's look authentic; from the box covers(front & back), the labeling on the dvd's...everything. My friend told me this vendor has been at that flea market for a number of years. He said, he believes it all to be legitimate but I don't know...something just doesn't seem right about it.

I've never heard of a movie released for sale before the it's out of the theaters. When my buddy told me, I was first thinking about going to check out this guys stock but I got to thinkin'...if these dvd's are hot, then wouldn't it somehow get me in trouble? Plus, I don't want to be a party to theft. That's all I need...to get into trouble for something like that!

I'm 33 years old but my mom would kill me !! :)

Aye Wrmach - but it costs nowt to have a wee look for yourself - yi canny get done from the polis for that!!

Tho - I would STRONGLY suspect this to be of the most dodgy nature :-) .. You hit the nail right on the heid yerself - films just do NOT get released on DVD before/during thier time at the flicks otherwise Hollywood would be reduced to a smoking pile of rubble.....they'd lose a fortune (nice thought tho!).

Aye, I thinks its dodgy buddy. Ive seen some REALLY good copies/counterfits and with todays PC's and printers, its feasible to make genuine looking copies quite cheaply. Hell, my own printer prints straight onto the body of the CD/DVD and its got a good DPI as well. Its not pro, but for around £200-£300 it wouldnt be far from it. So, its possible budd - cheaper and easier than you may think tae.

As I say - go have a look. It costs nowt and your Mum canny gie yi grief for "window shoppin" - also, just dinny tell her :-)

All the best bud.

If it's not released in stores, it's a bootleg. Might be an underhanded way to promote moving in various small markets, or could just simply be piracy...instudio swipes are pretty common...

I agree coco & dB. Maybe this is a silly question but if you were this vendor, wouldn't you be really worried about getting into trouble? It's not as if he's some shady character, selling bootlegs out of the trunk of his car, who can pick up and run when the heat is on.

My friend says this guy has had this store there for a few years and has 100's of titles. I don't know...you just think he would be worried about being caught. This flea market is only open on weekends. I can't go this weekend but next weekend I'm going to try and get over there and check it out.

Do you think I should ask this guy where he get's these dvd's from or should I just not say anything?

I know the law varies in different places but in general what do you think the penalty is for this...I guess you would call it piracy, right?

*you know what, I really enjoy our conversation's on here ...take care coco, dB... :)

If it's like software it's punishable by $10,000 fine per movie...I think...the law is not local or state level, it's a copyright infringement.

Again...I think, but then, I don't have to worry about it myself :-)

Aye..thats aboot right DB - fines may vary but if its hookie gear (dodgy) he'll get done from the old polizia if they catch him.

Yer right, its silly if he has a nice little shop/stall goin but its easy money too so he maybe thinks the benefits outweigh the risks.

Dunno bud ... let us know how yi get on tho.

P.S. I wouldnae ask him if he's real big and mean lookin :-) , if no - then hell aye, just ask him. If he does a runner faster than the Road Runner then yi ken he is up to dodgy shenanigans!

Yeah, I don't think I'd ask him or anything, at least I wouldn't, cuz it would probably be a lie anyway...I dunno tho, I am no expert in this field, just an expert in trying to stay out of jail... ;-D

Yeah, no doubt guys. I don't think I'm gonna say anything to him. With my luck, he's some kinda mafia guy or has some kinda ties with the crime underworld. Na, let him have his cake. If he wants to risk that kind of trouble...then thats his business !

See, I've never been in any trouble in my whole life. As my mom say's about me,"I've raised a good boy" :) [everybody say...aawwwwwww] The most trouble I've ever been in is a speeding ticket. So, I don't really understand what motivates these types of people to risk so much. I guess it's like you said coco, he might think "the benefits outweigh the risks." Not me though. I think I'm more scared of me Mums ,than I am of the law !

(although I would never want to room in a 6 x 10 cell with a guy named bubba... if you know what mean !!)
