An odd bit of applied research in what passes for my sound lab

I just wanted to share my progress in the search for a great sound.

For the last few days, my search for a quality guitar sound has intensified... During my time off, I've....

* figured out how to use vst plug-ins! (thanks, coco, for sparking my interest with the plug-ins you told me about)
* copped a few free vsts that have improved my guitar sound
* completely dethinked an' rethunk my approach to capturing my guitar sound
* blew the dust off the old Fender tube amp and jacked in
* figured out to unplug the amp speaker, then ran a line out from the "preamp output" of said amp and use the amp as a tube mic pre, into my mixer
* begun to record only clean (tube-warmed) guitar tones, using distortion only on my monitored signal
* started dynamically applying software-generated, non-destructive, real-time effects to my recorded clean guitar tones, instead of making a series of irreversible changes to a near-infinite hierarchy of backup tracks

So anyway, once again mostly thanks to what I've picked up at HRC, I'm trying to hone my recording techniques. I just wanted to share... I'm sure you guys'll hear the improvements, if any, in my next recording, whatever and whenever that may be. Anybody have any similar "development experiences" lately?

Nice one Tincan...nice one.

Aye - I done a similar thing (fairly) recently and I find it ongoing as my main instrument is the guitar. I do use others (albeit mainly modelled) but the geetar is ma instrument.

I DI'd the guitar to start with, then MIC'd the Marshall, then used ma wee VAMP2, then, the joy of VST!!! Amplitube is a killer - it has HUNDREDS of amps, settings and presets with guitar tones of EVERY decent guitarist/sound you could ever want.

I also use a number of free VST's and these are gid tae.

Tincan, sounds like yer gettin on well so I am delighted for ya. Mind and check:

www.kvr-vst.com - the biggest collection of free VST's I've ever found (not just amps EVERY effect, etc you could ever want). Just do a search for the free stuff..I downloaded over 100!!! GRREEATTT!

Good luck Buddy...

Nice TCB. Glad to hear about your success. I've also started getting good guitar tones recorded. It's been a LONG process (about 3 months, seriously), but very rewarding. This is what I've done:

*Lowered my distortion settings on my pedal.

*Severely increased the midrange on the distortion pedal to achieve a larger sound and better tone.

*Rethink the tone settings on my Peavey Classic amp MANY times.

*Started using compression before going into the amp.

****Started using Jues's two mic technique to mic the amp. It's seriously unbelievable what this one technique did to improve the sound of guitar recordings. I cant thank him enough for that tidbit of info. But thanks anyway!

All of my clean sounds are DI'd through my Boss recorder, so my findings are mainly for distorted guitar. But the two things that have been the most signifigant are the midrange boost and Jues's mic technique.

And as far as VST's go, I really recommend the Endorphin plugin from digitalfishphones. If this plugin hasnt won an HRC recommended award yet, I am surprised. The versatility of this compressor hasnt been matched by anything I've used yet. Especially at the price......FREE!
