Ok, here's the deal. Not sure if there's an actual problem with my recorder (BR532 - I know.... but I'm literally weeks away from PC land and the joys of that. Please leave me alone about that stuff!), or if I've just become super critical of everything I record since I found this site, listened to everything you guys (and girls) have to say, and re-reviewed what I was doing.... So, if it's not the recorder, it's you. Satisfied????! I'm not (which could be the problem).

Here's my problem: When I record, the levels seem to be very low and lifeless compared to what I remember hearing in the past. I'm being super careful about gain-staging and clipping, and will back-da-heck-up at the first hint of a crackle. Do these meachines "desensitize" - the levels just seem low. Or am I just being over critical, and should I let some of it slide for the sake of sanity? I just don't remember having too much clipping before, and the levels were nice and high.

Help me dB-wan......

Are you "monitoring" through the headphone out on the BR-532? If so, this could be a big part of your problem. I notice a BIG difference between the headphone out on the BR-532 and the headphone out on my Behringer mixer. Even when I'm just playing back something that's already been recorded. The BOSS's headphone out seems horribly lifeless....and pretty darn low.

oh youre using one of those? i used to use a boss br-8 and it was common wisdom (though i didnt hear of it until i went to a dedicated message board for the br-8) that the boss br-8 headphone jack was a dud. sucked for all users. shipped that way. the workaround was a line-out to a headphone amplifier. sure enough, it worked.
you can get a cheap one (like 10-15 bucks) at radio shack.

That would be it. I was monitoring through the headphone out on the unit (I was attempting to have the cleanest path into the unit, and wanted to monitor at the source - usually, I'd go through the Behringer mixer). Good work, guys. Glad to hear that I wasn't just turned into an audio snob by these forums.

Hopefully I'll have my new PC in a few weeks, and all this will be moot. Then I'll have a whole new slew of questions!!!!

Thanks again.

dB, if you're reading this (toady, toady), you'll be pleased to know that these forums WORK incredibly! Problem solved. Now I can get on with the recording!

Good stuff.
