MP3 - Lo Fi Standard Quality

OK...

I am now gonny make so Lo-Fi versions of all my song for my new website which is getting there.

What sort of bitrate etc is the norm for Lo-Fi?

I know we all use 128 and 44.1 for HRC but what would be a "decent" sound as lofi??

60kbps is about what will stream straight off on dial up, from what ive found...dont expect the quality to be ace though...

I'd think that 128 kbps would be as low of quality that you'd want to share anything in, especially music that you're trying to showcase the sound quality of. Anything less, and the "tinny" quality takes over and becomes the focal point of the piece. 128 kbps can even sound pretty bad with the wrong encoder.

Have you tried using a variable bit rate? I was surprised at how much space that can save...not sure how it does it, but I had a couple of .wav files that I encoded as a variable bit rate and they were much smaller that I would have imagined for an acceptible sound quality.
