Midi Problems...

Hi...

I've just upgraded my Sound Card to a Sound Blaster Audigy LS. I was considering buying a midi interface but was told by several "PC Experts" that a new Sound Card with a game port would do the same job (and be cheaper). Basically, I'd like to be able to plug in ze keyboard/drum module so I can record it via MIDI (with Logic). It's all set up now, the sound card's in and I've connected the keyboard (with a midi cable),but there's no signal in Logic! It's not doing a thing. I'd disabled on-board sound before installing the sound card, so it's definately not that! Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?!

Please help!

This may sound rudementary, but are you sure you have the new game/MIDI port assigned to the track and device properly?

To be truthful I'm not too sure...how would I go about checking this? Or setting it up in the event that I haven't set it up properly!!

It's Logic Audio 5 I have, and a Casio keyboard with midi capability!

Sorry if these are stupid questions, but hey, we've all got to start somewhere I suppose!!

OK just so I dont give you a silly answer I have a question before the answer comes.

Do you want to record the audio coming from the keyboard into Logic, or do you want to use the onboard synth of the sound card?

Quick answer anyway. If you are trying to record the midi notes from the Casio into a midi track make sure the track input is set to Omni. Second, if the keyboard is multi-timbral (meaning it can play more then one sound at a time) then make sure the output of the midi track you are recording to is set for a channels back to the keyboard.

Thirdly, if you want to record the audio of the keyboard make sure you have the audio output of the keyboard connected to the audio input of the sound card and it must be recorded to an audio track before you will hear anything playback.

Let me know if this helps or gets yo any closer.

Hey, thanks for replying!!

I just want to use the keyboard as a MIDI device, so I don't have to manually input any notes, i just need to play them in! Logic doesn't seem to be detecting the keyboard, although the sound card's installed correctly and can be detected.

So for each midi track I have to change the settings to Omni? What would the equilvalent of Onmi be?

Also, I opened the environment to try and find the keyboard and connect it up to the tracks this way, but again it's not detected!

Sorry if these are ridiculous questions...it must be a pain answering starter questions like mine!!
Thanks again!

I haven't used Logic, but most programs have a MIDI settings tab where you have to tell it where the MIDI data is coming from. Make sure that your soundcard is selected there. A lot of times they default to something like an internal MIDI-mapper or synth. Also, I once had a computer in the shop for a year trying to figure out why it wouldn't record MIDI data through the soundcard. No tech could find anything wrong anywhere on the computer. Turns out the MIDI cable was bad. Not a fun day in my little world.

Hey!

Thanks for all your help, eventually got it working!!! However...there's a delay on anything I play into the computer, about half a second from anything I play on the keybaord til the time it plays through logic. I know it can't be the keyboard as we plugged a drum module in too, and the same thing happened. We've checked the settings in Logic and everything seems to be fine! Anyone got any ideas?! Seeing as you're all clever!!! :)

Thanks again for all your help, tis much appreciated!!

check to see if you can find any buffer settings...you can drop these down when inputting to reduce that time-lag (latency, its called) then crank it back up when youre done...

i've tried reducing the buffer size but there's still a definate delay! It's not like our computer's slow, it's 512MB of RAM, 80 gigabyte hardisk, AMD Athlon 2400!

Any ideas?

well, this is what it says...

I/O Buffer size - options are .5, 1, 2, 4, 8,

You can adjust the volume smoothing (ms), and you can select larger process buffer and larger disk buffer.

I've tried most of the settings but there isn't much of a difference, and there's still a delay!

Thanks for your help by the way!!:o)
