My plan has been to pay a studio to do my vocal tracks with their WAY expensive Neuman mics.
However.. I am curious if anyone has liked using an sm58 for a main vocal track. I do have a new Aphex Aural Exciter on the way which may help to open up the sound. Thoughts?

Jul 25, 2004 11:35 am sm58s are awesome for vocals in my opinion, if you use em right. i found with the one i used they needed a boost on the high and mid frequencies and a dip on the low end for best results, but this might depend on the model youre using.
theyre ace!
Jul 25, 2004 12:07 pm Every song I have ever recorded has been with an SM58!!!
I love this mic. Its all I could afford and I thought it would be "OK to good" but I love it. If you believe Shure, it's the best live mic ever!!
I dunno - but I get no bad results IMHO.
Check oot the songs I have here at HRC under my profile. I also have songs at Soundclick - they are all different and show different sides of the MIC - but they were all SM58'd and SOLELY SM58.
Gid luck

Jul 25, 2004 01:55 pm You can definitely get good results from an SM58. But, you will almost definitely not get AS good results as you would from the Neumanns. I have both and record with both (depending on the circumstance), but for most tasks I use the Neumann for vocals. I think it really is a money/what result you're happy with tradeoff. What is the purpose going to be? Do you need absolute pro results or will very good be good enough?
