i dont currently use a patchbay and i am familiar with essentialy how they work for quick and easy patching/repatching.

but is there a way that i could use it for monitoring without any patching?

further explaination: hd24 recorder with a mackie 1604. i can record 16 at once then switch everything over since i cannot run a mic and a line at once and there is no A/B capability like on the behringer mx9000. typicaly i use 8 in and 8 out on my board which is all i need for me. after i record drums(7 mics) just push play. when drums are done i submix them quick for reference to track guitar, vox etc. but when doing a live band i feel this is too time consuming.

simplest route=buy another mixer one to track one for playback/mixdown
but can i use a patchbay some how so that i can leave my mixer in record mode and use the patchbay as an A/B switch so to speak or......hmm i bet it still wouldnt work cause i need the mic and the line input at one time......i may have just answered my own question

I don't think that's gonna fly.

Nope, don't think so. Still comes down to double tasking the mixer as I sees it anyway. Better off to use the HD24's track normalizing feature and set it to three banks of 8? Well, now you got me thinkin too. I hate that. Ya you are right; you would need a rack of 8 DI's as well to convert mic to line for the playback patch on the first 8 channels. That is getting to be a rather expensive fix for the re-patch activity. Wait a minute..... Patch the outputs of the HD24 to the second set of 8 on the mixer assigned to main mix. Then for second take use second set of 8 on the HD. Would this work? No patch bay needed at all with that scener-ee-no.

if i read you right walt..... you are talking about doing 8 tracks then turning tracks 1-8 on the hd24 into 9-16 while still only having the original 8 lined out? i dont think the outputs can be normalizedcan they? im not sure if thats what you meant but then when i want to listen to both takes(all 16 tracks)i need to repatch. like i said i usualy use 8 in 8 out do my drums then go back and and layer everything. the other day i did someone with 5 toms so i used 10 mics 3 more than usual(i know i could have submixed the toms to save those extra few tracks but i only have 2 different sets of 3 tom mics so i needed them seperate to EQ the same later[a nady mic does NOT sound like a sennheiser 604]) and i could not record and listen to his drum takes without repatching those 2 extra lines

the simplest bet i think would be to invest in a cheaper mixer to mix down or at least monitor then mix down through the mackie or acid later.
there may be no cheap fix for for this and i may have to repatch till i can afford a used behringer 16 channel mixer.

Ya, I think I am getting confused with exactly what you are doing. I usualy have to diagram things out for myself. I'm fairly visual. I was thinking with the 16 track mixer you could set you HD24 for 24 tracks, and normalize inputs to 8 tracks. Enable 1-8 for first take with drums. Next take enable 9-16 on the HD which will be internaly patched to your outputs at that point. Oooops, there is the snafu. No channels left to play back through. That route you would have to submix to two channels each take on the fly. Sorry bout that. Like I say, I often have to map out diagrams using Visio or Cad cam on some stuff. Too much for me to keep streight at times.
