Hey All,
I recently wrote and recorded this song and I was wondering if I could get a little feedback on it. I would appreciate feedback on any aspect of the recording; songwriting, mixing, etc.

Mar 14, 2004 12:36 pm Wow Scott! You've outdone yourself here. That is an excellent song and recording. I really like this one alot. Really sounds like something you'd hear on the radio. You did an excellent job on the vocals as well. Well done really!

Mar 15, 2004 06:31 pm Well, I have to say that is very impressive indeed. Even more so after I checked out your website and realized the age of your band.
Now take that as a compliment. You guys sound very polished and tight. And the song writing is amazing, very well constructed and played out. Your bands vocals are very powerfull, and the harmonies are fantastic.
Did you produce this piece yourself, or with a professional studio?
I listened to the other short demo's on your website and have to say I again was very impressed. I look forward to hearing more of your completed pieces. And I can honestly say, I cant find a thing to pick apart on this one at all, the production is extremely good.
I have added your bands website into our links directory here at HRC under Bands and Music.

Mar 20, 2004 07:38 am Sorry I'm so delayed in my response!
Thanks for all your feedback; I really apreciate it! I recorded, sung, played, mixed, etc everything on this song myself except for the really high backup vox in the refrains which were sung by Phil Lewis (pglewis); he lurks around some of these homerecording forums.
Thanks for checkin' out my band as well! I'm not sure when you listened to the clips, but I recently updated them all to the most current versions of some of the songs. We're currently working on our first album, and there are four 1 min clips from it if you're really bored and wanna check 'em out.
Thanks againg for everyone's replys!

Mar 20, 2004 09:38 pm Ditto here! Simply sweet!
Mar 23, 2004 08:10 pm Wow, man. You obviously have a lot of great equipment-- and know exactly how to use it. From the pics it looks like you've got quite a nice setup there. The mix is perfect and the overall tonal balance is very professional. Nice website too! That acoustic sounds absolutely awesome. What kind of guitar is it? Great job.

Mar 23, 2004 09:00 pm Well...I'm not sure what 'great equipment' you speak of; there are a few pics on my band's website of a local studio that we went to do a few drum tracks. (Is what you might be talking about?)
This recording was done in my basement with SM57s and 58s though a tiny Behringer mixer into an M-Audio Audiophile 2496. It's a Simmon and Patrick guitar recorded with an SM58 around the 12th fret or so.
Thanks,
Scott
Mar 23, 2004 09:35 pm Haha-- Well, maybe I should listen to it through better speakers or something when I get the chance, but that really does not sound like an SM58 on an acoustic!

Mar 23, 2004 10:35 pm Porp, I could hear it was a dynamic mic on my rig, but it fits so very well in the mix. I think it lets the vox out front without being overbearing as happens sometimes with a heavy acuastic guitar sound.
What did you think of the vox and harmony Porp? I found it sounded very polished for what looks like a very young band.
Mar 24, 2004 04:56 am Yeah, I really like the vocal sound and the harmonies are nice and tight. The harmony arrangement is also really good. Indeed.

Mar 24, 2004 04:29 pm I'm flattered!
This song actually isn't my band; this is just a song that I did. Phil Lewis helped out with the really high backup vox in the refrains. (He goes by the screen name 'pglewis' on these recording forums.)
Thanks again for all your feedback!

Apr 02, 2004 11:49 pm I thought I'd throw in a comment on this. I like the sound. Vocals are tight and edgy at the same time, very cool. I had a question about the acoustic, is that 1 acoustic or 2? It sounds like 2, but they are play exactly the same thing, so I'm guessing a delay on one? Nice effect, it doesn't sound all big a spacey like what can happen when you pan an acoustic in stereo. Great job, more please.

Apr 03, 2004 08:37 am slkeen,
I actually double tracked the acoustig guitars. The guitar was single miced but I recorded the song twice and played the same thing both times...panned one out left and one out right (Not hard left and right). There were no effect on the acoustic tracks except a tiny tiny bit of reverb and some very slight compression. Thanks for your feedback!

Apr 08, 2004 07:24 am Great song, Scott!
Just my cup of tea exactly. Also fits the mood i'm currently in.
Vocals are great, harmonies are perfectly chosen, perfectly placed and even better mixed! :)
I agree with the comment about the vocals... theyre very clean, but still have that slightly raw edge, which makes for heaps more passion and emotion than any autotune could ever lend itself to (and by that i dont mean that you are out of tune). I only mention that, coz i'Ve opften heard songs like this, with this kind of emotional feeling, totally ruined by the use of an autotune module or plugin.
I was half expecting the song to kick off several times in the song, with drums, distorted guitar and the works...at 3:03 for example, but you took it an entirely different direction which was also cool. It kinda sounds like an unplugged version of a song which also exists as a rockier version to me, but stands EXTREMELY well on its own.
Great work, great tones... really one of the nicest songs i've heard on the web recently. And by that i mean all aspects, from songwriting, performance, right through to engineering.
