The Alesis SR-16 is still a staple for all around sounds from rock to country to R and B. it can be had at Musicians Friend for $149.00 right now. It has been around for years and is easy to use, has rock solid sync and is very easy to program as well since you are going into a tape machine. The Tascam has the ability to send a sync signal so it can lock the SR-16 to the tape and it will start and stop with the tape giving you the ability to not use up tracks for drums until the final mix down.

I've used the Dr. Rhythymn Section, and was very impressed. Actually, I have a song that's still only partially completed, that was built on that machine, with bass, keys, drums, and a guitar in it. I've had a lot of people ask me how I recorded it, and some don't believe me when I say it was all dumped onto tape in one take from the drum machine. If I had the chance, I'd take that one over any other with no hesitation.
I have an Alesis SR16 right now and like it a lot, for a drum machine. It's flexible enough to be able to do just about any type of drum thing you could want. Snare rolls and things like that sound better on the Boss, though.
Hope this helps...
