i work in cubase sx, and say i wanna fade reverb into a vocal track... or put a phaser on guitar so the signal gradually gets wetter.... how do i go about doing this? thanks in advance

there's a setting that will force cubase to record your real-time tweaks. that's the way i plan to do it when i get to the level where i need to start thinking about such things.

you can find the command either in one of the sub menus...

or, i think, on the track inspector. i think there's a little 'r' button (for read) and a 'w' button (for write).

i think the way it works is that if you have 'w' depressed, cubase will monitor any changes you make to the faders or (possibly?) to your plugins in real time. then, upon playback, undo 'w' and depress 'r' and it will play back your movements.

actually, the more i think about this...

i think you've got to use plugins as insert effects for this to work.

and by the way, i know you can draw volume envelopes right onto the waveform with the pencil tool. perhaps there's a way to swap volume for some other adjustable parameter.

sorry i can be only of vague help. i haven't tried any of this yet.

forty, although you can automate such effects (via the R and W buttons), it is easier to draw such automation curves.

To do this, click on the small + icon on the actual track (near the track name, record arm, mute, solo, etc buttons). Doing this will bring up an automation lane - click on the text "volume" and you can now change this to whichever paramater you want control over.

nice.

but what if you want to automate a plugin like a chorus effect--a plugin that has its own dedicated interface? can you control that via this feature? if so, how do you select which feature of the plugin the ramp controls? another example: suppose you're using an equalizer plugin and you want to gradually ramp up 2 Khz for some insane reason.

That depends entirely on the pluggin. If it is automatable the parameters that can be automated will come up in the menu jues described. And as far as doing it with an EQ, that is simply another way of creating a filter type effect. I use it all the time.

good to know it's possible. this was one of the things that attracted me to cubase. in the future i'll be sure to play around with it.

this is my biggest holdback with my setup. not being able to fully automate junk.

fruity lets me automat certain things, but it's fumbly and you can't undo it. i've doen alot of tricky stuff with just a chain of VSTs with the final plug in the chain being a silverspike tapeit recorder and just recording my realtime tweaks that way.

oh i love silverspike's tapeit! doing long sessions with my plugins and recording them with one or several tapeit instances.

they have a new version out with a whole bunch of new features like syncing and auto-normalizing.
