I just released this little script for anyone running a PHP/MySQL website that I think is pretty cool.

What it essentially is at the high level is a little visitor tracker that analyzes visits into monthly reports by browser and OS of the visitor.

What the cool part is is that it is a rogue bot tricking, trapping and banning tool that allows the webmaster to ban bots and IP's at will, and if the coolest feature is used, naughty bots that don't abide by internet rules actually ban themselves when breaking a rule...

Eventually the goal of this is to have one huge master list of naughty bots maintained on a dbmasters.net database that can be shared among any number of websites via an PHP-generated XML file and have everyone that uses it banning from the same list. But for now, with this tool everyone can maintain their own list and ban what they want to ban.

Dig it, use it if you can, I want a few peeps to give it a go and see how it works on different installs.

HRC has been using this for a few days...and it has trapped a few.

Have you used anything like this? It seems that it would be a resource hog on the server that it's executing on. There's just something rewarding about the thought of spammers having to junk their email address databases every time they stumble across your web page :)

Apparently it doesn't affect legitimate search engine web crawlers.

hehehe, interesting. Also, The Harvestor Project, of which HRC participates in is similar, www.spywareinfo.com/harvest_project/ which is a cool project as well. Thanks for the link Tadpui, thats pretty colol little app, and I bet it's not to reosurce heavy, depending on HOW they generate the random emails...I could generate hundreds of random emails very quickly with a well-coded script.......hey.....hmmmmm.....that give me a thought...
