i dont know much about bit rates. yesterday i tried to make a wave file and burn to cd at 32 bit. the result was a whole lot of hiss and the song was barely audible beneath. why?

CD's only support up to 16-bit. I'm wondering how you got it on a CD at all...

What did you burn it with, if you burned it to red book standard maybe it automatically converted it to 16 bit...

Perhaps it didn't dither it or dithered it funky or something

i used musicmatch jukebox to burn it. but it was completely inaudible. just the ghost of the song below the hiss was detectable.

ok. so now i know what dither is for. work in 32 bit, dither down to 16.

or just work in 16bit in the first place.

It's a long argument with no real answer.
