Almost EVERY band has covered a song or two. What I don't understand is the bands that do NOTHING but covers. WHats wrong with Limp Bizket covering a song? Other than the fact that they suck and will never even come close to marking the same place in rock history that The Who has...

you can't say limp bizkit sucks. you can say that they forgot how to play there instruments or that they changed for mainstream, but please don't say that a band that created my favorite cd of all time sucks. the first cd they came out with back in 97 was so amazing. it is light years away from anything else they've created. soon after they seemed to have forgot that there playing for music and not money. hardly anybody even knows that they had a cd before significant other and thouse tend to be the people that think they suck. but of course this is your opinion and thats cool:) on the other hand the cover they did of that song is extreamly pitiful.

Well, everyone has different tastes, however, based on my tastes and opinions about music, I am very comfortable saying Limp Bizkit sucks...cuz, I think they do. I like that "Break Stuff" song, other than that, I don't think they could write their way out of a paper bag.

Everybody can get lucky once. If you like them, that's cool, but I can't stand them.

Just one man's opinion.

i totally respect your opinion. have you heard anything that was before the cd that break stuff is on? if you like break stuff you might like there older stuff to? if you havn't check out the songs "couterfit" or "stuck" by them you might like thouse to.

agreed. Three Dollar Bill Y'allz is an incredible record. No other LB disc even compares. The rocked harder than at any other time and kept the whining to a minimum.

brock, you have to realize almost no one has heard that first album. None of those songs had videos or radio play (except maybe "Faith", speaking of cover songs). SO let us examine dB's words; he said Limp Bizkit "sucks". Now technically that's referring to "right now". Currently Limp Bizkit is releasing nothing but crap, so when dB says they "suck" he's reffering to the present. Now if anyone wants to say Limp Bizbit has "always sucked" in ths past, that'd be a different story ;O)

Well, actually, what I said, or, meant to say, is that anything I have heard from Limp Bizkit, with the exception of the "Break Stuff" song, sucks. So it's not only right now, but in the past to when they first hit the radio.

And, I very well may like their older pre-radio days stuff, but, Ihave never heard, and presumably never will because I think they do, in fact, suck. Because while I don't mind "Break Stuff" I don't like it enough to further investigate the band, cuz, not only do I think they suck, but anything I have ever heard about Fred Durst is that he is a dick, so, compounding the fact they suck, with the fact he is a dick, and my interest is lost.

That said, I still feel bad saying it cuz I like brock, and feel bad trashing a band he obviously very much likes.

my problem with them is the connotations that go with listening to them...round here its music for 14 year old skaters...

again, just my opinion...

yeah its no fun to have your favorite band trashed. all i can say is that that music just wasnt made for people like me. it had too many connections to other social scenes and attitudes that i wasnt and never would be a part of. and it had an angry agenda, and one that seemed self-righteous, which i find boring. some people, though, like them.

wow, skaters out here *hate* LB. it's too mainstream for them.

"all i can say is that that music just wasnt made for people like me"

yeah, that sounds so much nicer than "they suck"

Houston has no suburbs, Houston just grow around towns, engulfs and annexes them, then they become "neighborhoods" in Houston :-D Seriously...

To get back to the original question...

Why would a band do a cover as a single?

That's easy. It's more likely to be a hit and make money. If you put out a new 'oroginal' song then there's no guarantee that people will like it. If you put out a cover of a previous hit you know that people like it already, there's no (or at least LESS) gamble. After all, record companies are there to make money.

I understand one of my fav artists, David Bowie, has put out a cover of the Kinks 'Waterloo Sunset' as his current single. Bowie's no mug when it comes to taking care of business. See, there's no obvious commercial single on his current album, like it as I do.

With a cover you have 'instant recognition' of the song, it doesn't need 3 or 4 plays for someone to decide they like it.

very true. check out speedways' 'genie in a bottle' - basically a strokes guitar line with the xtina lyric over the top for a prime example...

not heard anything from em since their bit cover hit...

i'd be a hypocrite to bash cover songs myself. i'm sure most of us have been in at least one band that did a cover. Personally I've been in a group that rocked some Metallica and some System of a Down to name a few. In no way were we trying to be like them or anything. MOre that we were such fans of the music that we wanted to show our admiration of such excellent examples of energetic metal. I miss the fun we had...

oh yeah, me too...i played every week for a year in a pub doing cover songs. and it was fun, people sang along, cos i was playing cool songs they thought i was cool, and i got free beer!

its also an easy way to get some gig experience without having to break onto the gig circuit...i learnt a ot of good lessons doing that.

sorry, but limp bizkit have to cover stuff cos fred turdst can't express an emotion of his own. in my humble opinion.

also, the stuff they do that i have heard has no originality beyond biohazard, sick of it all, metallica, fear factory, korn etc, some of which are old enough for me to have liked!

we used to do covers all the time, but only play one per gig, all sorts, nomeansno, dks, kinks, specials, police. well, apart from our slayer medley that we heavied up and started with a few times!

you can tell a lot about a band by the covers they do, i think...i keep trying to think of a cover that sums up me that i could do...

Around here, playing cover songs is a great way to learn how to play music AND how to play in a band. Every one of my earlier bands played cover songs. And it isn't always about instant recognition, sometimes its the exact opposite. I've played in bands whose covers were so obscure, most of the listening audience thought they were originals. And the rocked!! It's just easier to play someone elses music than to put all that time effort and emotion into creating something new and unique. However thats what separates a "performing artist" from a "musician". I still play cover songs in my band because it really is just fun. BUT...I'd never record one for an album. My $.02

covers are fun. we always sprinkle one or two into a set but we don't play any current radio hits. and i dont think we would ever record one unless we had a unique twist and unless the song was very good and obscure.

ha ha i just noticed the original post: limp BICKET
