I have friends in other states, and we want to make music together

I have a digi 002 rack, Pro Tools 6.1
I am new at this computer based stuff.
My buddies want to be able to send me tracks (they are on a limited budget) that interfaces with my stuff (Pro Tools).
Do they absolutely need Pro Tools, is other stuff cheaper and compatible for joining all our recordings into a final mix? Are any other less expensive programs totally compatible? What is the best way to accomplish this for them to spend less than 400 or so bucks?

they can use whatever multitracker they like, and so can you...just export your songs / single parts as wav files, email em or use an instant messaging programme like messenger to transfer them, and then import em back into whatever programme you (or they) are using

i collaborate a lot on here, and thats how i do it, and most others here do it that way too

theres a song in my music section (click on my profile then music if ya wanna) which is just a guitar line, someone else is gonna do some bass, someone else some drums etc etc all in whatever programme they're using

if youve got broadband, thats a big help in transfering the files, cos wavs can be pretty big, but mp3s are often more than usable for this too...

Thanks for the info..so what you are saying is that all wav files will be able to be fully manipulated by Pro Tools? I want to be able to add effects to their stuff, cut paste edit and master the stuff they send to me in another software program?

Once you import the .wav file into ProTools it becomes fully editable and controlable within ProTools like any track recorded right in ProTools natively. Many of us here at HRC do collaborative work, and many of us use different application, I have worked with flametheband, he uses IntuitiveMX, I use Sonar...I record my tracks, give them to flame who imports tham into IntuitiveMX for mixdown...some people here use Cubase, Vegas, Magix Music Studio, FruityLoops, Acid, Cakewalk...and different version of all the above mentioned apps. At .wav file level they can usually work together as long as the bpm was set properly in each app it should import very well.

O.K. here's my situation. I have 2 Friends in Indiana who live 5 hours apart. If we all Have Cakewalk Home Studio. How can I record then send it to them and get it back as three seperate tracks. Because once the last guy mixes it to .wav it then is one track, right? I want to be able to do the final mixdown here.
I just confused myself.
Help!

well if you all have Cakewalk Home Studio it's even easier, because you can just save the file as one big .bun or "bundle" file and email, ftp, or burn and mail the whole thing to each other. you don't even have to mess with exporting each track as wavs.

Yes indeed. the bundle file is a wonderfull thing. You can as Jamie said save the entire file as a .bun file and send that out. I do it that way frequantly with the studio here, getting in as well as wending out. I do also bring in larger wav files as individual tracks, that I will download from the customers site. Then when Ive done my thing, I shooot em back up, for their approval. I have been shooting tracks back and forth for awhile now that way and it works great. the internet is a great wy to send stuff back and forth.

An online collaboration system, with a whole bunch of other features, designed for the indie artist. You'll be able to transfer FULL quality files in less than half the time, all that jazz...

Hey Waldo, sounds good. When is your expected launch date? And are you gonna set it for any and all who wish to contribute or will it be by invitation only? Places like MisterBuster take any and all who wish to contribute and mxi it all up. Then you have the others where the only way your gonna get in is if you know someone.

It'll be based entirely on the project and whoever started it. If they want it open, or not.

No launch date, I never set them because I'm only one man, and my financial situation dictates massive changes in schedule.

Slowed down for financial reasons (season has been shitty, so haven't gotten many hours in paving, thus less pay), and other things such as running out of space on the old servers, having to put more money there to stave off... All that jazz.

Not sure, definately going to be late winter if it comes this winter at all.
