I've been looking into the possibility of getting a digital multitracker to replace my old cassette four track.

Have tried a search to get opinions on these models but nothing came up. Anyone ever used either of them or know what else i might look at.

Thanks

had ya thought about just getting the software to record to your pc? that'd be cheaper, chances are...

ive always thought those things to be quite limiting personally...unless you ned something portable.

ive got no experience of thises things to be honest, so im the wrong person to advise ya...someone'll know though

I have a Fostex vf160 - 16 tracks.

I love it. I work all day on a PC and don't want to use a PC for music making in my spare time!

It does what it says on the box and does it really well. Here's a link to a discussion group about this machine, a look through the posts will give you a flavour of any issues...

Main Advantages over a PC:
It's portable so you can take it to band practices and record up to 8 tracks simulataneously. It's a dedicated music recording machine built for the specific task.

Main Disadvantage over a PC:
Limited to 16 tracks (plus 8 extra 'storage' tracks which can 't be mixed from). Tiny little LED display rather than a big screen.

I'd skip the MR8 and go straight to the vf160 it's a little more money but you ARE serious about your music aren't you?

I'm as serious as i can be with a limited budget. I've just lost my access to home PC in a relationship break up. Theres no way i can afford a new PC along with the software but i do want more than a cassette four-tracker.

The mastering part of digital recorders has me a little confused. Do you need a PC for some of them? The Fostex VF80 appealed because as far as i can tell the mix can be mastered to the integral CD burner.

I'm sorry for appearing so ignorant but i haven't had time to record in 5 years so i'm way behind on the newer recording methods. Any info or links would be appreciated.

You can do everything you need on the vf160 in order to get your songs from your head onto an audio CD to play in your hifi. Yes, it comes with an inbuilt CD burner.

You don't need to buy anything extra to the vf160, it has its own built in effects (2 at any one time, reverb flanger, chorus, delay etc - user configurable). i have bought a separate compression unit, which I link in through the auximlliary connections.

As for your query about mastering, go to the link I posted and ask about mastering on the vf16 or look up the old threads. There have been some threads about this. As I understand it there were some 'mastering' presets on the vf16 which are not there in the later vf160 and this may be what you've heard about? However, from what i gather the presets were not 'real' mastering but normalizing and so on, mastering (so i am told by those who know more than I) is a whole field in itself and not something you can do at the press of a preset button!

But, yeh, you don't need a PC AND a vf160, just the vf160 will do to produce your music and that will be as good a product as your skill allows.

This link...

will also take you to a dedicted Fostex fourm where you can ask further questions and look through the archive, but the first link I posted is my favourite site for vf160 advice.

Good luck, whatever you decide.
