How do you EQ a Male screamer?

Hi-
I need some help-
How about EQ on a male voice yeller/screamer?
Higher-upper register. Like for example, a thin version of Robert Plant or Bon Scott.

Can it be EQ'd so its not shrill but doesn't get lost in the mix?. I'm thinking boosting lows and mids, but cutting high-mids and highs?

Pretty lost here.

Any ideas would be appreciated
thanks

I wouldn't boost anything, but cut the highs and maybe into the mids, also run it through some compression to take the edge off...or at least that is where I would start...

go mic, preamp, compressor, eq (or mixing console). This way you will be able to contort it a little before you eq. When you eq you want to cut twice as much as you boost, so try cutting a little, keep it under 0dB to avoid peaking. add a bit of reverb to it to give it a little bit of depth.
Please Note Sarcasm:
or you could just have the screamer learn to sing and not have to worry about it

Compression is the key to phat screaming. - set it with a fast-medium attack and a nice long release to bring it out - set the threshold really low to crunch it right down - that way you can also crank it in the mix.

In order to remove the "shrill-ness" - use a Parametric EQ plugin and boost really hard (about 15dB+) - now sweep this around the frequencies until you find the really nasty one causing the problems (will probably be around 2.7k-ish) - now cut it gently until things are a bit more controlable.

A good quality Room Reverb (short decay time) will also help broaden it out a bit.

I will agree on the compression as this will hold down the harshness. As jues stated, clamp it down tight to keep good control over the level. And as all the above stated, cutting EQ at the noisiest levels is the key here. If you dont want to have him sing while you search for the EQ setting just have him do a short take and loop it. Then you can sweep the Q at your leisure to find the trouble spot.
