Hi all, trying to put together the illusive home studio..now i know why there is a difference between engineers and musicians..i have a BERINGER MX3242X MIXER, YAMAHA AW1600 DAW, APPLE MACBOOK PRO 13'...HOW THE *&^% does all this hookup...have i duplicated things/equipment..should the mixer go directly to the computer(it has a cd/dvd burner)...is there a HOOKUPS FOR DUMMIES book...i'm literally pulling my hair out..trying to record music..like all musicians i just want to hit the button and away i go...HELP...i don't want to hire someone to just record in my basement and i'm sure it's simple but i'm just not getting this..any help appreciated...

Mixer, digital DAW and computer...yeah, kind of redundant...I'd lose the DAW and replace it with a decent audio interface for the laptop...run the mixer into the interface and thereby, into the PC...

Who records? Just you, one instrument at a time type of thing, or full band?

thanks for the reply...we do both band and just me solo..the beringer has 16 channels..can that go directly to the macbook pro or do i need a 16 channel interface??? i figured the aw1600 was redundant..i would like to go from mixer to comp or mixer interface then computer..but i don't want to lose any channels...do is a 16 channel interface(wickend expensive) or can i use an mbox pro that i have but that only has 2 channels..thanks again..wicked helpful....:)

I don't believe your mixer has a digital multichannel output (may have missed in the specs though)...so you would need an audio interface with as many inputs as you want to have separate tracks at any one time...and run individual channels or subgroup into each input.

Then you need a multichannel recording app to do it..are you planning on using garage band or have anything else?

i'm using garageband on the macbook pro...so is the 16 channel mixer a waste unless i get a 16 channel interface or do the mixer channels somehow get reduced to the interface then into the computer..i have an mbox pro but again only 2 channels..thanks again

Well, not necessarily...if you can use subgroups, and group a few things you can get by with less inputs...well planned you could get by with eight inputs I'd suspect, recording in groups rather than everything at once...

Of course, I toss that suggestion out there without knowing what players and miking scheme you use, but still, it's possible.

Does the behringer have outputs for each channel? Or how many outputs does the behringer. I think you can use sends or groups and stuff, but I never fully understood all that.

From what I am reading, it appears each channel has a direct output, plus, there are four subgroups and some aux sends...so there are loads of options.

Uh, at least one more time . . .

Yeah, that mixer is quite versatile as far as inputs/outputs go. Not to confuse the original poster any more, but you can benefit from a patch bay here as well. Maybe two of them. But you are more than ready, now, to roll.
The mixer's not a waste at all--you've just got a sort of bottleneck where only a couple of channels can get into the 'puter. May I humbly suggest a Behringer ADAT 8 channel converter (the Utragain 8 Pro). It takes 8 channels in and outputs 8 via lightpipe (ADAT). Of course, you need a soundcard that takes the ADAT in (and out). I don't think the Mbox will do that. I recommend this setup because I use it; it's reliable, and you can probably pick one up on Ebay for around $150.00 or so. You'll need to shop around for a soundcard--there are plenty available for what you need (using the Pro 8 or not) at very reasonable prices.
So, the mixer goes to the ADAT in (and/or also the soundcard, which should have analog inputs in addition to ADAT in/out), the ADAT goes to the soundcard, and the card feeds the Digital Audio Workstation's inputs. In your case, Garageband. Then of course you'll need monitors, headphones, a nice room(s) to do the work in . . . .
