IT'S not advisable , but I've made a few goof ups in trying to hurry up and plug in mic's and i've pluged in my B-1 and it didn't mess anything up .

We've goofed a few times too. Gotten a few THUDS that we didn't expect but never tore anything up.
I just started running the board at our church because no one has any idea how to ($5500 worth of equipment- not a nickle's worth a knowledge). Anyways, I was asked to straighten things out because they want to start recording the services and music. I started rewiring, rerouting, and resetting everything a couple weeks ago in my spare time. They have about 7 or 8 regular dynamic mics, a lapel mic that the preacher uses, and a pulpit mic that I couldn't get anything out of. I was investigating it to find out why and one of the deacons walked up and said that it took Phantom power, which I was unaware of. I had the board all jacked up and he hit the button before I could pull the volumes down. Needless to say, it did not make a joyful noise unto the Lord!! Once the old ladies stopped screamin' and the babies stopped cryin' everything was fine!! We didn't hurt anything but man, was it funny!! I was rollin'!!

heh, sounds like a *blast* bigfan. They probably thought it was trumpets and the end.

I'm anxious for anyone else (dB? Noize?) to step in and give the technical do/don't on phantom power.

Well,

The rule is never plug an XLR cable into a condensor when the +48v is flowing and NEVER(!) unplug an XLR cable from a condenser when the juice is flowing either - just remmeber to turn off the +48v's everytime you plugin and unplug a mic.

You run the risk of damadging the coil in the mic which can lead to it either not working or become less sensitive / responsive over time.

jues.

that's what i was looking to hear, jues, thanks.

one thing about the MK-319 microphone is it doesn't have the groove inside to *click* the cable in place, it just pulls right out. ditto on my mixer, it doesn't lock the cable down. i nfact the cable is relaly loose indide the mixer's jack...

Jamie, I just double checked and my 319 locks in place. You do have to push hard though as it is a good fit to prevent vibration. Anybody else got one that wont lock in?

That is probably the only complaint I have about Oktava. And it is kind of a nit really. They don't make the XLR recepticals very well. I have had to that I had to modify the cable a little to make it fit well. On one they didn't groove the recepticle enough for the guide key down the side, and the other was hard to get in far enough to lock.

Yep, like I said. For some reason they have this thing about a really tight fit. Walt, it sounds like you are saying yours was loose, or you just couldnt get it in far enough to lock?

And by the way, were have you been hiding Walt?
