Building my own guitar cabs?

How hard would this be for a person with no electronics, speaker, woodshop experience.

Would it save me a ton of money to buy speakers, parts, and wood and build my own guitar speaker cabinet? I only want a 1x12 or 2x12 not a big 4.

Possible? Schematics?

I have built quite a few speakers in my year and some with great results, but, it is more involved than just cutting some wood and throwing some speakers in...actually, that I found to be the easiest part...the harder part is size calculation for any given speaker you buy. Being a one or two 12 inch speaker plan, you don't have to worry about crossovers and that sort of thing...so that's good.

You can google around for cabinet volume calculations...depending on the specs of the speakers you buy, those specs figure in to determine the overall volume of the cabinet, and if you want to port the cabinet (for a guitar cab you probably won't) those specs will also determine the diameter and length of the tuned port.

As far as money savings, yeah, it can save you some money, but it all depends on the components you buy to build it with...a nice sheet of 3/4 plywood nicely sanded and finished isn't exactly cheap, raw speakers can cost a little or a lot, you get what you pay for...the wiring, well, that's pretty easy and cheap, wire and a jack or two for the back...

Ya know you could try buying 2nd hand cabs with no speakers and mod em. mate o mine used to do it, he'd rip em open and put baffles and whatever crazy ideas he had inside, then bought speakers. seemed to work good.

Crux, the first speakers I built were for stage monitors, and it wound up being a father/son project and we were both machinists, so it was fun for us to do. Dematrix has a good point too, look at second hand shops and you can find old, unloaded cabs sometimes pretty cheap.

The trickiest part, depending on your availavle ger, is cutting out a nice, perfect circle for the speakers.
